MOATE
ALL WHITES 1-12 GARRYCASTLE 1-9
Garrycastle
Junior B side suffered a significant blow to their league campaign when
losing out to Moate AW in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening, in a game
played in difficult weather conditions. With just 1 game remaining in
this division, Garrycastle cannot now catch Moate AW.
The
visitors were out of the traps quickly and had their first point on
the board within the first minute, but Garrycastle responded with a
point from Johnny McGuire. The sides then traded points, Garrycastle’s
score coming from a Noel Galvin free. The visitors again took the lead
with a pointed free and added to this with yet another free as the game
entered its 10th minute. Moate took a significant step in the 17th minute,
as a good build up lead to a goal. They could have gone even further
ahead a few minutes later, but Garrycastle goalkeeper, Stephen McGuire,
made a great save fro a penalty. A further point for the visitors put
them into a 6 point lead in the 22nd minute. Garrycastle enjoyed their
best spell between that and the break, scoring a point from a Noel Galvin
free as well as one from play by Paul Donovan. There were other opportunities
but they failed to convert these. The half time score 1-5 to 0-4 in
Moate’s favour.
Garrycastle
got the tonic of a goal by Paul Mulvihill in the first minute of the
second half to reduce the gap to just 1 point. The game ebbed and flowed
from one end to the other but each time that Garrycastle pointed, Moate
responded with a score of their own. There were points for Garrycastle
from Johnny McGuire, two from Noel Galvin (one a free), Finbarr Murray
and Paul Mulvihill. However, try as they might Garrycastle could not
reduce to margin below 1 point throughout the half and had to settle
for a 3 point defeat.
There
were good displays from Gary Mullery and Gary McCallon in defence. Noel
Galvin had a fine game in centre-field, while Paul and Peadar Mulvihill
were most prominent in attack.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Sean Carey, Frank Doolan,
Conor Molloy, Gary McCallon, Noel Galvin (0-4, 2f), Johnny McGuire (0-2),
Padraig Cosgrove, Finbarr Murray (0-1), Jim Byrne, Paul Mulvihill (1-1),

GARRYCASTLE
3-13 ST JOSEPHS 2-5
Garrycastle
Junior B side secured their first points in the section, with a well
merited win over St Josephs in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening. There
was a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch, however, despite
playing into it in the first half Garrycastle made a bright start. Their
first goal came in their very first attack, when Peadar Mulvihill weaved
his way through the St Josephs defence to raise the green flag. A point
from Adam Kennedy pushed Garrycastle further ahead and a second goal,
this time from Paul Mulvihill, established a commanding lead after just
8 minutes. Conor Molloy and Noel Galvin in the midfield were in dominant
mood and despite the strong wind Garrycastle were in total command.
Conor Molloy was fouled and Robbie Shine pointed the resulting free.
However, that was Conor’s last involvement as he had to be replaced.
St Josephs did get a wonderful point from a side line ball in one of
their rare attacks. Garrycastle suffered a second injury blow, when
Noel Galvin had to leave the field as so were without both of their
first choice mid-filed after only 16 minutes. Garrycastle continued
to dominate and points from Adam Kennedy and Johnny McGuire stretched
their lead. A third Garrycastle goal, and a second for Peadar Mulvihill,
put the lead out to 12 points after just 20 minutes. Further points
before the break, from Neil Rattigan and Johnny McGuire, leaf the score
line at 3-6 to 0-1 as Peter Daly’s whistle sounded for half time.
Garrycastle continued to dominate at the start of the second period,
with further points from Paul Mulvihill, a 45 from Robbie Shine, and
a point from Johnny McGuire. St Josephs rallied with their best period
of the game so far, and registered 3 points in a 4 minute period, two
from play and one from a free. Johnny McGuire had a point for Garrycastle
and St Josephs responded with a point from a free. Adam Kennedy then
pointed and Robbie Shine followed suit with one fro open play for the
home side. A two salvo from St Josephs was just reward for their better
play and helped to put a better gloss on the scoreline. Garrycastle
substitute, Finbarr Murray, had the last score, a good point in the
58th minute to leave the scoreline at 3-13 to 2-5 in Garrycastle’s
favour.
This
was a good performance from Garrycastle, particularly when playing into
the wind in the first half. There were some defensive lapses late on,
which will have to be eliminated if they want to progress in the competition.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, John Murphy, Sean Carey, Brian Carty,
Anthony Larkin, Neil Rattigan (0-1), Noel Galvin, Conor Molloy, Keith
Donoghue, Johnny McGuire (0-4), Robbie Shine (0-3, 1f), Peadar Mulvihill
(1-0), Adam Kennedy (0-3) and Paul Mulvihill (2-1).
SUBS: Finbarr Murray (0-1) for C Molloy (inj, 11 min); Frank Doolan
for N Galvin (inj, 16 min).

JUNIOR
B CHAMPIONSHIP (Section 3 - 30/8/2011)
SHANDONAGH
2-10 GARRYCASTLE 1-8
Garrycastle
Junior B side came away empty handed from their first game in the junior
B championship in Shandonagh last Tuesday evening. The home side made
the brighter start and had a point registered within the first minute.
Thereafter they found it difficult to break down a resolute Garrycastle
defence. Stephen McGuire made a very good save in the 6th minute to
prevent a goal for Shandonagh. Garrycastle had their first point in
the 11th minute as wing forward, Padraig Cosgrove, was on target. However,
Shandonagh continued to enjoy most of the possession and had two points,
both from frees, to jump into the lead. A further point from play pushed
the home side further ahead, but Garrycastle responded with a point
from Paul Donovan. Unfortunately Paul was injured as he scored and had
to be replaced immediately. A decisive score for the home side came
as the game entered its 28th minute, a goal after a defence splitting
move. However, Garrycastle responded in fine fashion to this set-back,
registering points from substitute, Frank Doolan, Peadar Mulvihill and
a free in injury time from Noel Galvin. This left just a goal between
the sides on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-5 in Shandonagh’s favour.
Garrycastle made a positive start to the second half and had a point
from Johnny McGuire to reduce the margin to just two points. However,
the home side got a second goal in the 37th minute to take a decisive
lead. Noel Galvin then reduced the margin with his second pointed free.
At this stage the home side were enjoying the vast majority of the possession
and the Garrycastle defence had to work tirelessly to restrict the number
of scoring opportunities. Three unanswered points for Shandonagh pushed
the gap out to 7 points with about 10 minutes remaining. A good Garrycastle
goal, scored by Johnny McGuire, reduced the margin in the 53rd minute
and Garrycastle were handed a wonderful change of a second green flag
soon afterwards, when a penalty was awarded, after a foul on Enda Keena.
Unfortunately from the Garrycastle perspective, the Shandonagh goalkeeper
saved Noel Galvin’s penalty and the danger was cleared. The home
side tacked on points from a free and from open play to lead by 6 points
as the game entered injury time. Garrycastle did have the last score,
a point from Johnny McGuire to leave it 2-10 to 1-8 in Shandonagh’s
favour at the end.
Overall
this was a disappointing performance for Garrycastle and the home side
deserved to win out. There were good displays from Stephen McGuire in
goal, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin and Sean Brennan in defence. The
forward division never clicked on the night but battled gamely throughout.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Brian Carty, Keith Donoghue,
Sean Brennan. Finbarr Murray, Noel Galvin (0-2, 2f), Conor Molloy, Padraig
Cosgrove (0-1), Johnny McGuire (1-2), Enda Keena, Peadar Mulvihill (0-1),
Paul Donovan (0-1) and Paul Mulvihill.

GARRYCASTLE
0-13 ST LOMANS 2-7
Garrycastle
Junior B side had to reply upon a converted free by its captain, Noel
Galvin, to rescue a point from this encounter in Garrycastle last Tuesday
evening.
Garrycastle started in fine form and had a point on the scoreboard in
under 2 minutes thanks to a free from Robbie Shine. The same player
then added a point from open play. Noel Galvin got his name on the scoresheet
with a good point as the 5th minute approached. However, Garrycastle
were rocked back a minute later when St Lomans scored a good goal from
their first real meaningful attack to level matters. Despite this setback,
Garrycastle continued to dominate possession and a string of points
from Conor Cosgrove, Cathal Joyce, Robbie Shine and a converted free
for Conor Cosgrove pushed the home side into a 4 point lead by the mid
point of the half. St Lomans showed great resolve and fought their way
back into the game. As they got a foothold in the match, they rattled
off 5 points, all of which came from open play, without reply in an
eight minute period to take a 1 point advantage. Garrycastle then showed
their resolve and fought their way back, a converted free by Robbie
Shine was followed-up with points from Eoin Monaghan and Conor Cosgrove
to lave the scoreline 0-10 to 1-5 in Garrycastle’s favour at the
break.
After
a free scoring opening half, the small attendance could be forgiven
for thinking that they would be treated to more of the same in the second
half. However, as it turned out, the scoring dried up as both sets of
defences got to grips with their opponents. Garrycastle had a point
from Eoin Monaghan in the 35th minute to increase their lead. However,
St Lomans responded with two points of their own to reduce the gap to
the minimum again by the 43rd minute. St Lomans then had a second goal
in the 51st minute to take the lead with under 10 minutes remaining.
Eoin Monaghan was again on target for the home side as Garrycastle pressed
forward in an effort to salvage at least a point. Both sides were reduced
to 14 players for second yellow card offences. Garrycastle substitute,
Paul Donovan, was fouled as he tried to cut inside his marker and Noel
Galvin expertly slotted over the equalising score before Peter Daly
sounded his final whistle. The match ending in a draw on a final score
of 0-13 to 2-7.
There
were good performances from Gary Mullery and Conor Harrington in defence.
Noel Galvin lead by example throughout while Conor Cosgrove, Eoin Monagahan
and Robbie Shine were most prominent in attack. Despite a bright opening
half, Garrycastle had to battle in the end to get a share of the points.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Duignan, Conor Harrington, Anthony
Larkin, John Murphy, Sean Brennan, Noel Galvin (0-2, 1f), Johnny McGuire,

GARRYCASTLE
2-16 ST JOSEPHS 1-9
Garrycastle
Junior B side got their league campaign off to a winning start in Streamstown
last Tuesday evening with a win over the home side, St Josephs.
Playing
into a strong wind, Garrycastle found the going tough in the first half
and were a point down within 10 seconds as St Josephs scored with their
first attack from the throw-in. Padraig Cosgrove got his side off the
mark with a point from a tight angle in the 6th minute but the home
side were ahead again almost immediately with a good point from play.
St Josephs stretched their lead to 2 points with another score from
a close range free. However, Johnny McGuire, operating at mid-field,
popped up with a good point in the 15th minute. The side were soon level,
when Paul Mulvihill scored a point. St Josephs regained the lead in
the 20th minute with a point from a free, but Robbie Shine restored
parity almost immediately with a reply from open play. St Josephs then
had a point from both a free and open play to open up a 2 point lead
again. Gary McCallon broke forward to hit a point for Garrycastle but
this was cancelled out by yet another score for St Josephs with about
a minute of play remaining in the half. This was to leave the scoreline
at 0-7 to 0-5 in St Josephs favour at the break.
Garrycastle
made a blistering start to the second half and were level within a couple
of minutes, with points from Johnny McGuire and Conor Molloy. Padraig
Cosgrove put Garrycastle into the lead for the first time in the match
in the 34th minute with a long-range point. The game’s opening
goal came in the 35th minute, when a high ball from Conor Molloy deceived
the St Josephs goalkeeper and ended-up in the net. St Josephs responded
to this set-back with a good point from play. However, this signalled
a period of domination by Garrycastle with a succession of points from
Robbie Shine (2), Peadar Mulvihill, Padraig Cosgrove, Gary McCallon
and Conor Molloy opening up a big gap. St Josephs scored a point in
the 51st minute to stop the rot but further points from Robbie Shine
and Conor Harrington stretched the lead again. St Josephs did not give
up and had a point of their own and then created a couple of goal opportunities
in quick succession. They managed to convert one in the 56th minute.
Garrycastle had the last say on the scoreboard however; as Jim Byrne
was on the end of a good move to score a goal with what was to be the
last kick of the game.
This
was mixed performance, with Garrycastle struggling to turn possession
into scores in the first half but doing better in the second. They will
have to improve if they wish to clinch league honours this year. Best
for Garrycastle were Conor Harrington, Noel Galvin, Conor Molloy and
Robbie Shine.
PS
A minute silence was observed before the throw-in as a mark of respect
to former
Garrycastle player, Michael
Doolan RIP.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary McCallon (0-2), Anthony Larkin, Conor Harrington
(0-1), Fergal Murray, Michael O’Donoghue, Brian Carty, Noel Galvin,
Johnny McGuire (0-2, Jim Byrne (1-0), Conor Molloy (1-2), Peadar Mulvihill

JUNIOR
B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 2010 (16/1/2011)
GARRYCASTLE
3-9 BALLYNACARGY 1-14 (after extra time)
Garrycastle’s
Junior B side became the first side in the club to capture the Junior
B championship title with a gutsy display in the much postponed final
played in Ballynacargy last Sunday morning.
Garrycastle
had to defend into a very strong wind in the first half and as a result
had to battle to limit the scores for the home side. Ballynacargy started
brightly and had their first point in the opening minute. They doubled
their lead almost immediately with another point from play. Ballynacargy
increased their lead to 3 points in the 6th minute and with 10 minutes
elapsed had stretched this out to four. A goal for the home side in
the 11th minute gave them a seven advantage and Garrycastle were holding
on for dear life. Garrycastle began to get hold of some decent possession
and did have a couple of opportunities to get on the scoreboard. However,
they failed to convert a couple of frees into the teeth of the wind.
Brian Carthy was unlucky when his effort for goal in the 17th minute
came back off the upright and was cleared. However, their efforts were
eventually rewarded when Kevin Hogan broke through only to see his shot
strike the woodwork but he reacted quicker than the home defenders and
struck the rebound to the net in the 23rd minute. Ballynacargy responded
in style to that setback and from there to the break hit over a succession
of points, one from a free and five from open play to lead by 1-10 to
1-0 at half time.
Garrycastle
knew that they would have to work much harder, even with the aid of
the wind, if they were to get back into the game. Conor Cosgrove fired
over a point from a free in the 5th minute of the second period. A point
from a Noel Galvin free in the 38th minute was soon followed by a fine
point from Fergal Murray to reduce the gap to seven points. Conor Cosgrove
then had another pointed free to leave just six between the sides. Ballynacargy
had a rear foray up field and had a point in the 50th minute. Garrycastle
kept up the pressure and a goal was scored by centre-back Sean Brennan
after good approach play in the 53rd minute. Game on!!! Kevin Hogan
again hit the woodwork but Conor Cosgrove put his side within just one
point with his side’s third goal in the 57th minute. Garrycastle
pressed forward in search of an equalising point and their efforts were
rewarded when Conor Cosgrove struck over a free in the first minute
of added time after a foul on Paul Donovan. The referee’s whistle
was sounded a minute later and the sides had to face into two 10 minute
periods of extra time.
Garrycastle
played the first period with the aid of the wind and went into the lead
for the very first time in the final in the 2nd minute with a pointed
free from Paul Donovan. They took a two point lead when Conor Cosgrove
hit over a fine point from play. Ballynacargy hit back and had a point
of their own in the 6th minute which left Garrycastle a point to the
good at the end of the first period of extra time on a scoreline of
3-7 to 1-12.
It
did not appear that a single point lead would be sufficient facing into
the wind. However, Garrycastle showed great experience and composure,
and retained possession well when they had it. Ballynacargy levelled
the sore with a point in the 3rd minute of the second period from a
free. However, Garrycastle regained the advantage when Noel Galvin struck
over a point from a close range free following a foul on Paul Donovan.
The home side again levelled matter with a point just as the game entered
its final minute and it looked like the match would have to go to a
replay. The referee played on and Garrycastle attacked one more time.
Conor Cosgrove broke forward but seemed to lose control of the ball.
However, the same player regained possession and struck over a glorious
point to put the visitors into the lead yet again. While there was another
minute played by the referee, Garrycastle held on for a wonderful victory.
This
was a cracking game of football played by two evenly matched sides.
Despite all the rain, the Ballynacargy pitch was in excellent condition.
Football Board Chairman, Des McGuire, in presenting the Junior B trophy
to Garrycastle Captain, Padraig Cosgrove, rightly praised both sides
and the officials for a wonderful game and the Ballynacargy club for
its excellent presentation of the pitch.
It
was the proverbial game of two halves (and the same in extra time).
This was primarily a team performance by Garrycastle. They showed great
fight to come back from a 10 point deficit at half time and to dig out
the win in extra time. Well done to all of the players, who made the
first year in which the club fielded a third adult team, a championship
winning one.
GARRYCASTLE:

JUNIOR
B CHAMPIONSHIP (Semi-Final - 6/11/10))
GARRYCASTLE
1-7 TANG 1-5
Garrycastle’s
Junior B side advanced to this year’s Junior B championship final
where they will meet Ballynacargy. After all the rain of recent days,
the afternoon cleared up well to allow the game proceed in near ideal
conditions. The pitch in Tang was dry but heavy underfoot.
The
home side made the better start and at times Garrycastle looked as if
they had never played together before. Tang took the lead in the 4th
minute with a pointed free. They increased their lead with a point from
play after 11 minutes. Garrycastle had some sporadic attacks but poor
shooting let them down. A fine point from Paul Hogan got Garrycastle
off the mark at the mid point of the half and was quickly followed by
a point from Noel Galvin to level the scores. A pointed free from Conor
Cosgrove put Garrycastle into the lead and Robbie Shine added to this
with a good point with about 20 minutes elapsed. Garrycastle were playing
well at this point and a high ball into the Tang goalmouth was spilled
by the goalkeeper and Paul Donovan was on hand to fire it to the net
for the game’s first goal. The Garrycastle cause was dealt a severe
blow soon afterwards when wing back Brian Carthy, was shown a second
yellow card, followed by a red, by Referee, Seamus McCormack. Tang then
got a bigger boost when a high ball was not cleared by the Garrycastle
defence and the loose ball was dispatched to Stephen McGuire’s
net. However, there was enough injury time for Conor Cosgrove to fire
over a point from play and leave Garrycastle to the good at the break
on a score-line of 1-5 to 1-2.
Sean
Brennan moved back into the defence and Garrycastle reorganised with
just 2 players in the full forward line for the second half. While the
play switched from end to end, there were very few scoring opportunities
for either side. Tang grabbed a point in the 34th minute but Paul Donovan
responded with a nice point from play. A further tang point was replied
to by one from a Conor Cosgrove free as we approached the mid point
of the second half. Despite being down a man, Garrycastle held on to
possession well and supported one another superbly. A promising attack
by substitute, Justin McAteer, was only foiled by a brilliant tackle
from a Tang defender. Tang reduced the gap to 2 points with a free in
the 51st minute after Gary Mullery was harshly pulled for picking the
ball off the ground. This was to prove to be the last score of the game
as Garrycastle held possession and limited the chances of the home side
to get hold of the ball.
Congratulation
to the squad on reaching the final and they showed great heart when
having to play with 14 for the majority of the game. The defence was
excellent, particularly in the second half and each and every player
gave everything to the cause. The displays of Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington,
Noel Galvin, Sean Brennan, Conor Cosgrove, Robbie Shine and Kevin Hogan
deserve particular praise.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Duignan, Conor Harrington, Anthony
Larkin, John Murphy, Brian Carthy, Sean Brennan, Noel Galvin (0-1),

JUNIOR
B CHAMPIONSHIP (Quarter-final 25/10/10)
GARRYCASTLE 2-15 KILBEGGAN SHAMROCKS 0-7
Garrycastle’s
Junior B side advanced to the semi-finals of the Junior B Championship
with a comprehensive win over the visitors in wet and windy Garrycastle,
last Bank Holiday Monday evening.
Playing
into the wind for the first period, Garrycastle dominated possession
but in the opening few minutes could not avail of the scores on offer.
However, Paul Donovan finally got his side on the scoreboard in the
7th minute with a well taken point. A pointed free from Robbie Shine
increased their lead and this was quickly followed by a point from Conor
Cosgrove. The game’s first goal came on the 13th minute as Robbie
Shine was on the end of a flowing attack to finish with aplomb. Justin
McAteer then added a point which was soon followed by a pointed effort
from Conor Cosgrove. Garrycastle’s second green flag arrived in
the 17th minute from the boot of Paul Donovan and with the scores now
at 2-5 to no score it was looking ominous for the visitors. However,
Kilbeggan Shamrocks did get on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute with
a point from a close range free. Garrycastle pressed on and points from
Conor Cosgrove, Robbie Shine and Conor Cosgrove yet again saw the home
side take a 2-8 to 0-1 advantage into the break.
The
second half was a more evenly contested affair. This was because of
a more determined effort by the Kilbeggan Shamrocks players and perhaps
an easing off by Garrycastle. Kilbeggan Shamrocks got a point from a
free but it was cancelled out by an effort from Noel Galvin. Brian Carty
broke forward from wing-back and slotted over a good point for Garrycastle.
Kilbeggan Shamrocks responded with two points from play in quick succession.
Conor Cosgrove had a point from all of 45 meters into the strong wind
as we reached the mid point of the second half. Substitute, Kevin Dunne,
had a fine point but this was responded to by an equally good score
for Kilbeggan Shamrocks. Conor Cosgrove had another successful long
range effort. The sides then exchanged points, Garrycastle’s coming
from Conor Cosgrove. A pointed free for the visitors in the 59th minute
was their last score of the game and Conor Cosgrove finished off a fine
performance with another white flag in the last minute of play.
This was a fine team performance from Garrycastle, particularly in the
first half when playing into the wind. The defence was solid throughout
with Anthony Duignan and Brain Carty most prominent. Noel Galvin and
Sean Brennan dominated in midfield and provided an ample supply of good
ball to the forward division. Justin McAteer, Conor Cosgrove and Paul
Donovan were lively throughout and were well assisted by Robbie Shine
and Kevin Dunne in the second period.
Garrycastle
await the winner of the Tang/Ballymore quarter final (date and venue
to be confirmed), while St Lomans and Ballynacargy will contest the
other semi-final.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Duignan, Conor Harrington,
Brian Carty (0-1), Anthony Larkin, John Murphy, Noel Galvin (0-1), Sean

against the visitors, Rosemount, in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening.
The
home side made the better start and had a point on the board within
a couple of minutes from a free by Robbie Shine. Rosemount played some
nice football but were finding scores hard to come by. However, Rosemount
equalised in the 7th minute with a point from play. From the kick out
Rosemount attacked again and opened up the Garrycastle defence to raise
a green flag. Garrycastle responded with a point from Kevin Hogan, but
this was immediately replied to with a Rosemount point. Rosemount increased
their lead with another point from play. Kevin Hogan responded with
a point from a close range free. Rosemount had their best period of
the game from the 15th to the 25th minute of the half. During that time
they added further three points, two of which came from frees. Padraig
Cosgrove had a point for Garrycastle in the 26th minute and his side
were thrown a lifeline as the half time break approached. A good surging
run from Noel Galvin saw him pass to Robbie Shine who was fouled in
the large square and Garrycastle were awarded a penalty. Robbie Shine
finished it to the net to leave the scoreline 1-6 to 1-4 in Rosemount’s
favour at the break.
Playing
with the breeze in the second half Garrycastle pressed forward trying
to reduce the visitor’s lead. A point from Kevin Hogan was soon
followed with a point from a Robbie Shine free to level the scores.
Garrycastle took the lead for the first time since the 2nd minute with
a point from Kevin Hogan in the 42nd minute. They then doubled their
lead with a point from midfielder, Sean Brennan. Rosemount did not surrender
and went in search of their own scores. A pointed 45, after Stephen
McGiure had made a great save from a deflected shot, reduced the margin.
The sides were level again in the 55th minute when Rosemount converted
a close range free. The visitors grabbed the lead in the 57th minute
with yet another free. Garrycastle pressed forward and their pressure
was rewarded when Brian Carty hit over appoint from the right in the
last minute of normal time. Both sides had opportunities to get a winner.
However, both defences held out and a draw was a fair result.
There
were good displays fro Stephen McGuire, Anthony Duignan and Conor Harrington
in defence. Noel Galvin and Sean Brennan tried manfully throughout.
Robbie Shine, Kevin Hogan and Paul Donovan were most prominent in attack.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Duignan, Conor Harrington,

2-6 ST MARYS 0-10
Garrycastle
Junior B collected two more valuable points from their trip to Rochfordbridge
for this re-arranged tie last Tuesday evening.
The
home side made the brighter start and registered their first point after
5 minutes from a close range free. St Marys had a number of other opportunities
for points in the early exchanges but shot wide under pressure from
the Garrycastle defence. Paul Mulvihill got Garrycastle on the scoreboard
in the 7th minute with a good point from play. St Marys took the lead
again with another pointed free and it was not until the 16th minute
before Garrycastle drew level with a point from Sean Brennan. A good
attack from the home side created a goal opportunity in the 20th minute
but Garrycastle goalkeeper, Stephen McGuire, brought off an excellent
save at the expense of a point. Garrycastle were lifted by this save
and drew level with a point from Kevin Hogan as the half time break
approached. However, St Marys worked a final attack and were awarded
a free which they converted in the last minute of the half to lead by
0-4 to 0-3.
Garrycastle
began the second half in determined fashion. A goal was scored from
the penalty spot in the 35th minute by Conor Cosgrove after a promising
attacked was ended with a foul on Kevin Hogan in the large square. Conor
Cosgrove was then on the end of another good passing move to finish
to the net for his and Garrycastle’s second goal of the game to
put his side into a 5 point lead in the 39th minute. St Marys responded
with a point but Peadar Mulvihill replied with a point for the visitors.
The home side pressed forward and hit over 3 points without reply in
the 42nd, 50th and 53rd minutes to narrow the gap to two points. A point
from Kevin Hogan restored Garrycastle’s advantage with just a
minute remaining in normal time. There was some 4 minutes of injury
time played because of stoppages to allow treatment to Anthony Duignan
and Noel Galvin. During that time, St Marys hit over two points but
Conor Cosgrove responded with a point from a free after a foul on Peadar
Mulvihill. The final score was 2-6 to 0-10 in Garrycastle’s favour.
This
was a good battling performance from a side short of some regulars.
After a shaky start they settled and played some good football, particularly
in the second period. There were notable performances from Conor Harrington,
Anthony Duignan, Gary Mullery, Noel Galvin, Kevin Hogan and Conor Cosgrove.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Conor Harrington, Anthony Duignan, Paul Donovan, Gary
Mullery, John Murphy, Padraig Donoghue, Noel Galvin, Sean Brennan (0-1),

2-15 BALLYMORE 4-5
Garrycastle Junior B side got their championship campaign off to a winning
start in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening in what was an entertaining
and high scoring affair. Garrycastle got off to the better start and
had a point from Conor Cosgrove in 2 minutes. A goal from Rory McGowan
followed after 6 minutes; however, Ballymore hit back immediately and
registered a goal of their own. A couple of points from Conor Cosgrove
put his side further ahead and in the 10th minute Robbie Shine hit over
a point from play. Paul Donovan then got a point and Robbie Shine hit
over a free to put the home side into a 6 point lead after 13 minutes.
However, Ballymore rallied strongly and hit 2 goals within a couple
of minutes to leave the scores level. Conor Cosgrove gave Garrycastle
the lead again with a goal in the 19th minute. Two points from Robbie
Shine and a pointed free from Conor Cosgrove brought the scoring in
the first half to a close with the home side 2-9 to 3-0 in the lead.
On
the resumption, Conor Cosgrove increased his side’s lead with
a pointed free. Ballymore responded with 2 points from play. A point
from Rory McGowan was replied to by Ballymore. Noel Galvin chipped in
with a point from play but Ballymore had 2 points of their own soon
afterwards. The game was thrown wide open in the 50th minute when the
visitors struck for their 4th goal of the game to leave just 2 points
between the sides. A point from a Conor Cosgrove free put Garrycastle
3 ahead. Ballymore replied with a pointed free in the 53rd minute. A
point from Conor Cosgrove with 5 minutes remaining restored Garrycastle’s
3 point advantage. The final score came in the last minute of play,
a pointed free from Paul Donovan after a foul on Robbie Shine, as Garrycastle
held on for a 4 point win.
It
was a very open game with both sets of forwards having the upper hand.
Best for Garrycastle were Gary Mullery, Robbie Shine, Rory McGowan and
Conor Cosgrove.

TANG
1 - 9 GARRYCASTLE 0 - 8
Garrycastle
Junior B side played their re-arranged fixture last Thursday evening
and went down to their first defeat of the league against a skilful
and determined Tang team. Tang had a point in their very first attack
and were soon 2 points to the good with a well taken point from the
left. Tang stretched the lead to 3 points in the 10th minute as Garrycastle
found it difficult to get a foothold in the game. The first Garrycastle
score did not come until the 12th minute, when Conor Cosgrove shot over
a point. Robbie Shine then got his side’s second point with a
smartly taken score. Tang responded with another point from a promising
attack before Padraig Cosgrove struck a good point from the right wing.
The Tang goalkeeper made an excellent save from Paul Donovan at the
expense of a 45. However, Conor Cosgrove’s attempt at a point
from the 45 sailed wide. The same player had a point from play to put
the sides’ level in the 25th minute. Noel Galvin then chipped
in with a point after he won a throw-in near the 20 meter line to put
Garrycastle into the lead for the first time in the game as half time
approached. However, Tang responded well and had an equaliser on the
stroke of half time to leave the side on 0-5 each at the break.
Garrycastle
started the second half in blistering fashion and had two points within
the first 4 minutes. The first came from the boot of Robbie Shine and
the second from Conor Cosgrove. However, Tang refused to yield and responded
with two points within a minute to level matters again. Justin McAteer
put Garrycastle ahead again in the 37th minute but that was to prove
to be his side’s last score. Tang upped their game and drew level
with a free in the 41st minute. Tang took the lead in the 48th minute
and a tight finish looked on the cards. A goal for Tang in the 56th
minute put them 4 points to the good. Garrycastle tried everything to
pull the lead back but came up against a determined Tang defence and
could not get the required scores.
Garrycastle
will be disappointed to have surrendered their 100% record in this division
but can have no complaints on the night. There were good displays from
Alan Fox on his return to action after a long period out with injury.
He was well assisted by Anthony Larkin and Sean Brennan. Brian Carty
and Conor Cosgrove were most prominent in attack in what was a disappointing
performance overall from the Garrycastle forward division.

Anthony Larkin, Neil Rattigan, Justin McAteer, Noel Galvin (0-1), Padraig

4 – 16 MOATE ALL WHITES 0 – 8
Garrycastle Junior B side maintained their 100% record in Division 7A
when they made the trip to Moate last Friday evening to take on the
home side, who before this game also had a perfect record in the division.
While
the scoreline reflects that Garrycastle dominated the proceedings, it
does not do justice to a Moate side who gave as good as they got in
the opening 20 minutes and were it not for some poor shooting would
have been a lot closer at the end. Garrycastle hit the front in the
very first minute when Conor Cosgrove hit over a point from play. Moate
responded with a point straight away. Conor Cosgrove restored the Garrycastle
lead with a point from play only for Moate equalise immediately. Moate
hit the front in the 9th minute with a point from a free. An equaliser
came for Garrycastle when David McHugh fisted a point in the 13th minute.
Moate regained the lead a minute later with yet another point from play,
only for Garrycastle to equalise when Noel Galvin converted a free.
Moate hit the front again in the 17th minute with a point from play.
However, the game took a decisive turn in Garrycastle’s favour
in the next attack. Good approach play put David McHugh in the clear
and he remained composed to place his shot beyond the goalkeeper for
a Garrycastle goal. From that point on the Garrycastle midfield duo
of Noel Galvin and Rory McGowan took almost complete control. A point
from a Noel Galvin free put his side into a 3 point lead. A second Garrycastle
goal arrived in the 24th minute, when Conor Cosgrove got behind the
Moate defence and dispatched his shot to the net. A wonderful point
from Padraig Cosgrove from the right wing and some 45 meters from goal
pushed Garrycastle further ahead and Conor Cosgrove hit yet another
point as half time approached. Moate did have the last say on the scoreboard
with a point in the 3rd minute of injury tome to leave it 2-7 to 0-6
in Garrycastle’s favour at the break.
Moate started strongly on the resumption but a couple of good opportunities
for points were wasted because of poor shooting. Garrycastle had a point
from Adam Kennedy. Brian Carty replaced the injured Colman Gantley in
the 3rd minute of the second half and was immediately into action and
hit over a good point. Conor Cosgrove converted a 45 meter kick and
David McHugh had a point to stretch the lead. Another pointed free from
Conor Cosgrove put his side 12 points up as Garrycastle dominated throughout
the field. Moate had a point from a free in the 45th minute but any
faint hope of a recovery was banished a couple of minutes later when
Adam Kennedy shot his side’s third goal. Another goal, this time
from substitute Paul Mulvihill, only went to emphasise Garrycastle’s
dominance. Moate had a point from a free as the game entered its last
10 minutes. However, Garrycastle continued to press forward and points
from Rory McGowan, Peadar Mulvihill, Noel Galvin from a free and a second
Rory McGowan point were added to the score. On Referee, Declan Nugent’s
final whistle, the visitors lead by 4-16 to 0-8.
This
was an excellent team performance from Garrycastle who after an initial
period took complete control and were worthy winners. There were excellent
displays throughout but the contributions of Padraig Donoghue, Sean
Brennan, Rory McGowan, Conor Cosgrove and David McHugh deserve special
praise.

gaols from Conor Cosgrove (2), Justin McAteer and Conor Harrington sent
Garrycastle into a half time lead of 4-5 to 1-1 for the visitors.
Garrycastle

2 - 13 ST JOSEPHS 1 – 5
Garrycastle’s
Junior B side got their league campaign off to a winning start last
Thursday evening against St Josephs. The game was switched to Streamstown
as the Garrycastle pitch was unplayable following the recent wet spell.
Garrycastle
made a bright start and registered their first point in the very first
minute when Paul Donovan was on the end of a good build up to slot over
the score. However, they were rocked back immediately when St Joseph’s
first attack saw them get behind the Garrycastle defence and find the
back of the net. A close in free was converted by Robbie Shine in Garrycastle’s
next attack, but St Josephs restored their 2 point advantage when they
converted a free in the 5th minute. Robbie then had a point from open
play and Garrycastle were level in the 12th minute thanks to a good
point from Noel Galvin. Garrycastle had the upper hand in midfield and
this provided a good supply to the forwards. A Garrycastle goal in the
21st minute put them into the lead again as Conor Cosgrove was on hand
to blast a shot to the net following good approach play. Another point
from Paul Donovan put his side further ahead but this was cancelled
out with a St Joseph’s point from play. Garrycastle were guilty
of some poor misses at this stage and a number of opportunities were
sent wide or possession lost due to over elaboration. A pointed free
from Paul Donovan put Garrycastle into a 4 point lead but St Joseph’s
reduced the margin to 3 right on the break with a close-in free to leave
the score 1-6 to 1-3 in Garrycastle’s favour at the break.
Garrycastle
came out in determined fashion at the start of the second half and Conor
Cosgrove got his and Garrycastle’s second goal within 3 minutes.
A pointed free from the same player enhanced their lead with just 5
minutes of the half gone. At this stage Garrycastle enjoyed almost total
domination and reeled off a succession of scores from Brian Carty, Neil
Rattigan, Robbie Shine, Paul Donovan and another Robbie Shine free to
establish a commanding lead. The lead would have been even greater were
it not for some fine goalkeeping from St Joseph’s Ciaran Seery.
St Josephs rallied at this stage ad had two well taken points from pay
in the 46th and 49th minutes. However, Garrycastle were to get the final
score, a pointed free from Conor Cosgrove, with about 7 minutes remaining.
The final whistle saw Garrycastle lead by 2-13 to1-5.
This
was good performance from this Garrycastle Junior B side playing their
first game together. They can look forward to greater challenges ahead
but if the players show this level of commitment and skill in their
remaining games they can challenge for league honours. There were solid
defensive performances from Conor Harrington, Padraig Donoghue, Anthony
Larkin and Neil Rattigan. Noel Galvin commanded midfield and was well
assisted by Michael O’Donoghue. There was some good play in the
forward division, particularly from Padraig Cosgrove, Conor Cosgrove,
Robbie Shine and Paul Donovan.
