SENIOR B CHAMPIONSHIP: 31/10/2008

The Downs 1 – 8 Garrycastle 1 - 7

An under strength Garrycastle junior team, fielding without the injured Aidan Browne and several other absentees, failed to advance to the semi-final of this year’s Senior B championship by the narrowest of margins in a game played under lights in Garrycastle on Friday night last.

Garrycastle started brightly enough and monopolised possession in the opening stages. However, they only had a point from James Dolan in the sixth minute and one from Jonathan McGuire in the 10th minute to show for their superiority. A point from full-forward, Robbie Shine, stretched their lead to 3 points in the 9th minute. The Downs registered their first score in the 16th minute when converting a close in free. However, the Downs grabbed an unexpected lead a minute later, when a free dropped short but the Garrycastle defence failed to deal with the danger and the ball was fisted to the Garrycastle net. Garrycastle responded to this setback with a point from a free by Conor Cosgrove to level matters. The Downs regained the lead with points in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to leave 2 points between the sides. However, Garrycastle were given a lifeline with 5 minutes remaining in the half, when good approach work allowed Colman Gantley to release Conor Cosgrove and the corner-forward took full advantage to blast the ball to the net and give Garrycastle a 1 point advantage at the break on a scoreline of 1-4 to 1-3.

The game was won and lost in the opening quarter of the second half. The Downs seized the initiative and registered 5 unanswered point, all but one of which came from play, between the 34th and 42nd minutes to lead by 4 points. To their credit Garrycastle fought back and a pointed free from Noel Galvin in the 44th minute game them hope that they could recover. Another pointed free from Conor Cosgrove reduced the margin to 2 points as the game entered its last 10 minutes. Garrycastle kept plugging away and were rewarded for their efforts when Robbie Shine pointed from close range to leave just a point separating the sides with about 2 minutes remaining. Garrycastle kept pressing for an equaliser, but despite having a couple of opportunities they could not register the score needed to tie matters up.

It had been almost 3 months since this team last played together and in truth it showed at times, as there seemed to be a lack of co-ordination between defence, midfield and attack. The defence played well apart from some slackness for The Downs goal with Tom McHugh, Mark McCallon and Donovan Hermbusche to the fore. The midfield of Stephen O’Reilly and Noel Galvin worked very hard throughout and had the upper hand for most of the game. It was in attack that Garrycastle had most of their problems, but Neil Rattigan and Robbie Shine were most prominent throughout the hour.

This team have one league division 4 game remaining, are in contention to take the league title and have an opportunity to have a reward for all the hard work throughout the year.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh (Capt), Anthony Duignan, Mark McCallon, Donovan Hermbusche, James Dolan (0-1), Anthony Larkin, Noel Galvin (0-1), Stephen O’Reilly, Jonathan McGuire (0-1), Colman Gantley, Neil Rattigan, Conor Cosgrove (1-2, 0-2f), Robbie Shine (0-2) and Paul Mulvihill.
Subs: Anthony McCallon for Paul Mulvihill.

ALL COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 4: 5/8/2008

Garrycastle 1 – 12 Shandonagh 0 – 5

Garrycastle kept their unbeaten division 4 campaign in tact with a win over the home side in Shandonagh last Tuesday evening. However, this was at some cost, as Aidan Browne had to retire with an ankle injury sustained at the throw-in. In fact things got worse as Shandonagh opened up a two point lead as they did all the early pressing. Garrycastle finally got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute as Rory McGowan scored a fine goal. Further points from Johnny McGuire, and a couple from Alan Daly saw Garrycastle establish a four point advantage by the 22nd minute. Shandonagh hit back with a point soon afterwards and trailed by only two points with a well worked point from play. However, Garrycastle, who had squandered many fine scoring chances with poor shots and over elaboration, had the last score of the half with a point from Robbie Shine to lead by 1-4 to 0-4 at the break.

Shandonagh had the first score of the second period, a point from play to reduce the margin. However, this proved to be their last score and Garrycastle dominated possession for the remainder of the game. Two points from Robbie Shine widened the gap and these scores were followed-up with points from Noel Galvin, Alan Daly, Rory McGowan from a 45, and Alan Daly again to establish an eight point advantage. Robbie Shine hit two more points before the end to leave Garrycastle worthy winners on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-5.

This was a mixed bag from Garrycastle. Poor approach play and misdirected passes and shots characterised the first half performance. Only the efforts of Tom McHugh, Donovan Hermbusche and James Duignan gave hope. The second half performance was much better and at least they put some good passages of play together. Robbie Shine and Alan Daly always posed a threat to the Shandonagh defence. It was great to see Enda Mulvihill make a welcome return to action after a long lay-off due to injury. However, Aidan Browne’s injury will be a worry for Garrycastle supporters as the season moves into a decisive stage.

GARRYCASTLE:- Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh, Anthony Duignan, Padraig Rattigan, Donovan Hermbusche, James Duignan, Johnny McGuire (0-1), Aidan Browne, Stephen O’Reilly, Robbie Shine (0-5), Noel Galvin (0-1), Rory McGowan (1-1, 0-1 45m), Conor Cosgrove, Alan Daly (0-4, 1f) and Paul Mulvihill.

ALL COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 4: 9/7/2008

Garrycastle 1 – 14 Bunbrosna 0 – 5

Garrycastle juniors kept their impressive league campaign on track with a well merited win over Bunbrosna on Wednesday evening. The first half was played in a thunder storm, with torrential rain making it very difficult for the players on both sides, but to their credit they served up an entertaining game.

Garrycastle were quickly into their stride and Conor Cosgrove had his side’s first point within a minute of the throw-in. Bunbrosna replied immediately with a good point from play. Points from Rory McGowan, Conor Cosgrove and Paul Mulvihill put Garrycastle back in front. Bunbrosna’s second point arrived in the 12th minute, but this proved to be tier last score of this half as Garrycastle took complete control of the game. Garrycastle had a succession of points from here to the break from Conor Cosgrove (3 points, including one from a free), and two from Johnny McGuire to leave Garrycastle leading by 0-9 to 0-2 at the break.

Bunbrosna made the better start to the second half, and were rewarded with a point after 37 minutes. This was soon followed by a pointed free to reduce the deficit to 5 points. Garrycastle were creating chances, but some wasteful shooting resulted in several wides. The home sides’ goal arrived in the 48th minute, from the boot of Conor Cosgrove after good approach work opened up the Bunbrosna defense. This was quickly followed by points from corner back Tom McHugh and Conor Cosgrove yet again. Bunbrosna replied with a point from a free, but Garrycastle were well in control and registered further points from Neil Rattigan, Conor Cosgrove and James Duignan before the final whistle.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh (0-1), Anthony Duignan, Padraig Rattigan, Emmet Ward, John O’Shaughnessy, Donovan Hermbusche, Aidan Browne, Stephen O’Reilly, Rory McGowan (0-1), Johnny McGuire (0-2), Padraig Cosgrove (1-7, 0-2f), Conor Cosgrove, Alan Daly, Paul Mulvihill (0-1).
SUBS: Noel Galvin for E Ward (36 min); Neil Rattigan (0-1) for P Cosgrove (44 min); James Duignan (0-1) for R McGowan (48 min); Anthony Larkin for D Hermbusche (53 min) and Gary Johnson for P Mulvihill (53 min).

ACL DIVISION 4: 30/5/2008

Garrycastle 1 - 16 Killucan 0 – 8

Garrycastle’s junior team continued their good league form with a comprehensive and well deserved win over Killucan in Garrycastle last Friday evening. Right from the start Garrycastle got a grip at midfield but some good scoring chances went astray early on. It was not until the 4th minute that Conor Cosgrove converted a free to open the scoring. Further points from Rory McGowan (2) Alan Daly and Padraig Cosgrove had stretched the Garrycastle lead to 5 points after 21 minutes of play. Killucan finally got on the scoreboard with a point in the 23rd minute. Further points from Alan Daly, a Conor Cosgrove free, Stephen O’Reilly and a point from play by Conor Cosgrove saw Garrycastle’s lead increase to 8 points by half time.

The second half resumed with Garrycastle again dominant and they increased their lead with a point from Paul Mulvihill. Killucan needed to get some prolonged possession and to their credit they upped their performance to register the next 3 scores, all points, to reduce the gap to 6points after 36 minutes. A point from James Dolan stopped the Killucan surge and this was soon followed by further points from Alan Daly and James Dolan again. Killucan had the next point before Garrycastle substitute, Robbie Shine, was on the end of a flowing move to punch the ball to the net for the game’s only goal. Killucan had a point from a free, but further points from James Dolan and Stephen O’Reilly saw Garrycastle in a commanding position with just 8 minutes remaining. Killucan pressed forward to try and get the scores to bring them back into the game and were rewarded with a point from a free and one from play. However, that was to be their last score and Conor Cosgrove had the last score with yet another pointed free to close out the match by 1-16 to 0-8 in Garrycastle’s favour.

This was a reasonable performance but there is room for improvement. The defence was solid throughout with particularly good displays from Stephen McGuire, Donovan Hermbusche and John O’Shaughnessy. The midfield partnership held the upper-hand throughout and provided a strong platform for the forwards. Rory McGowan, Alan Daly, James Dolan and Conor Cosgrove all had good games.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh, Anthony Duignan, John Murphy, Donovan Hermbusche, John O’Shaughnessy, Jonathan McGuire, Stephen O’Reilly (0-2), James Duignan, Rory McGowan (0-2), Conor Cosgrove (0-4, 3f), James Dolan (0-3), Paul Mulvihill (0-1), Alan Daly (0-3) and Padraig Cosgrove (0-1).
SUBS: Colman Gantley for J Murphy (35 min); Robbie Shine (1-0) for P Mulvihill (38 min); Emmet Ward for J McGuire (44 min); Anthony Larkin for D Hermbusche (50 min); and Niall Ward for P Cosgrove (57 min).

ACL DIVISION 4: 6/5/2008

Garrycastle 1 – 12 St Lomans 3 – 5

Garrycastle second team made the trip to Lakepoint Park, Mullingar on Tuesday evening to take on St Lomans. It was a lovely evening for football, with the new pitch in immaculate condition.

Garrycastle made the better start but did not convert their possession into scores until the 6th minute, when Rory McGowan pointed after good approach work. A sustained period of possession failed to yield scores for Garrycastle and they had to wait until the 17th minute to register their second point, this time from a Conor Cosgrove free. St Lomans hit back immediately with two points within a minute to level matters after 19 minutes. Garrycastle finally got their scoring boots on with a return of a goal and four points in the remaining 10 minutes of the half. Their goal coming from Aidan Browne, whose lofted pass deceived the St Lomans goalkeeper to drop into the net. Further points from Alan Daly, a Conor Cosgrove free, Aidan Browne and a Noel Galvin free saw Garrycastle establish a lead of 1-6 to 0-2 at the break.

St Lomans had the first score of the second period to reduce the margin. However, Garrycastle had a point from Neil Rattigan, who had replaced John O’Shaughnessy at the half time break. The lead was further extended when Noel Galvin had a point in the 36th minute. St Lomans hit back strongly, scoring a goal and a point within a minute of each other. Padraig Cosgrove steadied Garrycastle with a well taken point, but he received an injury in the process and had to be replaced by Paul Mulvihill. Two more points from Noel Galvin frees seemed to put the result beyond doubt. However, a two goal burst in the 55th and 57th minutes saw their lead reduced to just one point with 3 minutes remaining. A point for St Lomans a minute later leveled matters and it was all to play for. Another Garrycastle attack saw James Duignan burst forward from defense and a dangerous tackle on him, which earned a yellow card for the St Lomans centre back, resulted in a free on the left about 30 meters from goal. Noel Galvin stepped up to convert the free and regain the lead for his side. This was to be the last score, and Garrycastle had secured victory at the end on a scoreline of 1-12 to 3-5.

There is no doubt that Garrycastle were the better side but a lapse of concentration late on nearly saw them lost the points which they deserved. The defense was solid until the late scoring burst from St Lomans, with Tom McHugh, Anthony Duignan and James Duignan to the fore. Aidan Browne had a good first 45 minutes but seemed to fade towards the end. Noel Galvin chipped in with 5 points (4 from frees) including the last point under pressure. Alan Daly showed well and did not get the scores or indeed the frees which his play deserved.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh, Anthony Duignan, John Murphy, Donovan Hermbusche, James Duignan, Johnny McGuire, Aidan Browne (1-1), Stephen O’Reilly, Noel Galvin (0-5, 4f), John O’Shaughnessy, Rory McGowan (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 2f), Alan Daly (0-1) and Padraig Cosgrove (0-1).

SUBS: Neil Rattigan (0-1) for J O’Shaughnessy; Anthony Larkin for J Murphy; Robbie Shine for C Cosgrove; Paul Mulvihill for P Cosgrove and Gary Johnson for A Daly.

ACL DIVISION 4: 22/4/08

GARRYCASTLE 2 - 10 TYRRESLLSPASS 1 - 8

This was a very entertaining game played in difficult conditions in wet and windy Garrycastle last Tuesday. Tyrrellspass came with a strong team and took early control with the wind behind them. They had built up a lead of 1-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes and Garrycastle were struggling in most areas. A point by Rory McGowan reduced the deficit to six points and when the same player finished to the net from a Gary Johnson pass Garrycastle were right back in the game. A late point from the visitors gave them a half time lead of 1-6 to 1-2. Garrycastle resumed with purpose and two pointed frees from distance by Noel Galvin gave them confidence. Further points by Conor Cosgrove (3) and Rory McGowan put Garrycastle in front, and substitute Paul Mulvihill clinched victory for Garrycastle with a well taken goal and then added two points for good measure.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Tom McHugh, Anthony Duignan, Liam Downey, Paraic Rattigan, James Duignan, John Murphy, Noel Galvin (0-2, frees), Johnny McGuire, Neill Rattigan, John O’Shaughnessy, Rory McGowan (1-2), Conor Cosgrove (0-4, 2 frees), Gary Johnson, Padraig Cosgrove.
SUBS: Paul Mulvihill (1-2), Anthony Larkin, Robbie Shine.

ACL DIVISION 4: 15/4/08: Garrycastle 0 - 11 Castledaly 1 - 8

In their first competitive outing of the year, the second team salvaged a share of the points in this closely fought league encounter in Castledaly on Tuesday last. Garrycastle started well with two early points by Alan Daly but despite dominating the first quarter they added only a Padraig Cosgrove point before Castledaly inevitably came into the game and eventually drew level, mainly through pointed frees. Garrycastle enjoyed another good spell coming up to half time and points from Alan Daly, Rory McGowan and Paul Mulvihill gave them a lead of 0-8 to 0-5 at the break.

Two more points from the lively Alan Daly kept Garrycastle in front in the third quarter until the home team got through for a goal to level the game. Yet another pointed free put Castledaly ahead ten minutes from time and they hung onto that lead until the final seconds when James Duignan showed great composure and accuracy in kicking over the equaliser from 40 yards after some easier opportunities had gone astray.

GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, John Murphy, Anthony Duignan, Liam Downey, Paraic Rattigan, James Duignan (0-1), Donovan Hermbusche, Noel Galvin, Johnny McGuire, Neill Rattigan, Gary Johnson, Padraig Cosgrove (0-1), Rory McGowan (0-1), Alan Daly (0-6, 1 free), Paul Mulvihill (0-2).
SUBS: John O’Shaughnessy for P Mulvihill and Anthony Larkin for N. Rattigan.
