GARRYCASTLE
1-10 ST MARYS ROCHFORDBRIDGE 1-8
Garrycastle’s junior side made it two wins out of two in the league
when they travelled to Rochfordbridge to take on St Marys last Thursday
evening.
Playing
with the aid of a strong breeze, the home side made a bright start and
scored a point from their very first attack. Garrycastle hit back with
a point from midfielder, Johnny McGuire. However, Garrycastle were rocked
back straight away when a short kick-out by the Garrycastle’s
Michael Fagan led to a passage of play where possession was lost by
the defenders and the ball was dispatched to the net. John McGowan responded
with a good point from play for the visitors. Pascal Dillon was unlucky
when his powerfully struck shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety.
A point for St Marys was replied to with one form Conor Molloy from
play as the first half approached the mid point. However, from there
to the half time break, St Marys dominated the play and reeled off a
succession of points, two from play and two from frees, to lead on a
scoreline of 1-6 to m0-3 at the break.
The second half started no better for Garrycastle, as St Marys tacked
on a point from open play to increase their lead to 7 points. However,
this was to be the catalyst for the visitors to up their game. They
took control in the midfield and the forwards began to cause all sorts
of problems for the St Marys defence. A point from Johnny McGuire was
quickly a
dded
to with a goal from Conor Molloy, who just got his fist to the ball
before the St Marys goalkeeper could intercept a pass to him and the
ball trickled into the unguarded net. The same play then added a point
to narrow the gap to just 2 points with about 20 minutes remaining.
Garrycastle continued to press forward and points from substitutes,
Paul Donovan and Paul Mulvihill, to level matters by the 45th minute.
A magnificent point from another substitute, Michael Kelly, from all
of 45 meters on the left wing, put his side ahead for the first time
in the game after 48 minutes. Further points from Robbie Shine and Paul
Donovan put Garrycastle 3 points up with just 5 minutes remaining. To
their credit St Marys responded in determined fashion but could not
break down the Garrycastle defence. They had a goal opportunity near
the end but were foiled by a save from Michael Fagan and the follow-up
shot was blocked by Sean Brennan. St Marys did manage a point in the
final minute but Garrycastel ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-10
to1-8.
This
was a reasonable performance from Garrycastle, where they struggled
for long period in the first half but dominated in the second. There
were some good individual performances from Sean Brennan, Peadar Mulvihill
who moved to wing back with the injury to Michael Dunning, John McGowan
and Conor Molloy. All three substitutes made a telling contribution
in addition to their scores.

ALL
COUNTY LEAGUE (Division 7A – 13 April 2012)
GARRYCASTLE 0-11 ST JOSEPHS 0-8
Garrycastle’s
junior side got their league campaign off to a winning start last Friday
night with a narrow but deserved win over the visitors, St Josephs.
The first half was played in driving rain and this made underfoot conditions
and handling difficult for both teams. An illustration of this was an
injury picked up in the 2nd minute by Johnny McGuire when he fell awkwardly
in the middle of the pitch as he fielded a ball and had to be replaced.
Garrycastle
made the better start and had a point in the second minute from Brian
Carty. Noel Galvin doubled their lead with a point in the 10th minute.
However, St Josephs hit back with two points in quick succession to
level matters in the 13th minute. The visitors had a goal chance soon
after but Garrycastle net minder, Michael Fagan, brought off a great
save and the danger was cleared. St Joseph did take the lead in the
19th minute but Peadar Mulvihill responded with a point for Garrycastle
almost immediately. A point from substitute, Paul Gunning, put Garrycastle
into the lead again in the 27th minute. The visitors put good use to
the additional time played for the injury to Johnny McGuire by scoring
an equaliser in the 4th minute of added time to leave the sides level
at the break on 0-4 a piece.
St Joseph took the lead in the 3rd minute of the second half with a
point but Garrycastle hit back strongly and in their best period of
attacking hit over 3 points in a 3 minute spell to take a two point
advantage. The Garrycastle points came from Conor Molloy, Paul Mulvihill
and Brian Carty. St Josephs had a point in the 37th minute to reduce
the gap to 1 again. Michael Fagan brought off yet another wonderful
save to deny St Josephs a goal and a point from substitute, Jack Donoghue
increased the gap to 2 in the 41st minute and Alex Gardiner pushed it
out to 3 with a well taken score as the game entered the final 10 minutes.
Further points from Peadar Mulvihill and Noel Galvin established a 5
point lead with just 3 minutes remaining. Both sides had a player red
carded for a second yellow card offence and St Josephs finished the
game strongly with a point in the first minute of injury time and a
point from a free (the only score that was not from play in the entire
game) just before the final whistle.
This
was a mixed bag from Garrycastle, with a much improved display in the
second half. Michael Fagan brought off some fine save in goal and deserved
to keep his goal intact. There were good defensive displays by Sean
Brennan, and Ciaran O’Neill in particular. Noel Galvin was solid
throughout and was well supported by Robbie Shine when he mover to midfield
on Johnny McGuire’s departure due to injury. There were good performances
in attack by Brain Carty, Alex Gardiner and Peadar Mulvihill.

This win put them into the semi-final.
The
sides were level at 3-4 to 1-10 after an hour of play and Garrycastle
just got enough scores in added time to eek out the win, despite conceding
a goal from a penalty right at the end.

GARRYCASTLE
3-13 ST JOSEPHS 2-5
Garrycastle
Junior B side secured their first points in the section, with a well
merited win over St Josephs in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening. There
was a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch, however, despite
playing into it in the first half Garrycastle made a bright start. Their
first goal came in their very first attack, when Peadar Mulvihill weaved
his way through the St Josephs defence to raise the green flag. A point
from Adam Kennedy pushed Garrycastle further ahead and a second goal,
this time from Paul Mulvihill, established a commanding lead after just
8 minutes. Conor Molloy and Noel Galvin in the midfield were in dominant
mood and despite the strong wind Garrycastle were in total command.
Conor Molloy was fouled and Robbie Shine pointed the resulting free.
However, that was Conor’s last involvement as he had to be replaced.
St Josephs did get a wonderful point from a side line ball in one of
their rare attacks. Garrycastle suffered a second injury blow, when
Noel Galvin had to leave the field as so were without both of their
first choice mid-filed after only 16 minutes. Garrycastle continued
to dominate and points from Adam Kennedy and Johnny McGuire stretched
their lead. A third Garrycastle goal, and a second for Peadar Mulvihill,
put the lead out to 12 points after just 20 minutes. Further points
before the break, from Neil Rattigan and Johnny McGuire, leaf the score
line at 3-6 to 0-1 as Peter Daly’s whistle sounded for half time.
Garrycastle continued to dominate at the start of the second period,
with further points from Paul Mulvihill, a 45 from Robbie Shine, and
a point from Johnny McGuire. St Josephs rallied with their best period
of the game so far, and registered 3 points in a 4 minute period, two
from play and one from a free. Johnny McGuire had a point for Garrycastle
and St Josephs responded with a point from a free. Adam Kennedy then
pointed and Robbie Shine followed suit with one fro open play for the
home side. A two salvo from St Josephs was just reward for their better
play and helped to put a better gloss on the scoreline. Garrycastle
substitute, Finbarr Murray, had the last score, a good point in the
58th minute to leave the scoreline at 3-13 to 2-5 in Garrycastle’s
favour.
This
was a good performance from Garrycastle, particularly when playing into
the wind in the first half. There were some defensive lapses late on,
which will have to be eliminated if they want to progress in the competition.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, John Murphy, Sean Carey, Brian Carty,
Anthony Larkin, Neil Rattigan (0-1), Noel Galvin, Conor Molloy, Keith
Donoghue, Johnny McGuire (0-4), Robbie Shine (0-3, 1f), Peadar Mulvihill
(1-0), Adam Kennedy (0-3) and Paul Mulvihill (2-1).
SUBS: Finbarr Murray (0-1) for C Molloy (inj, 11 min); Frank Doolan
for N Galvin (inj, 16 min).
JUNIOR
B CHAMPIONSHIP (Section 3 - 30/8/2011)
SHANDONAGH
2-10 GARRYCASTLE 1-8
Garrycastle
Junior B side came away empty handed from their first game in the junior
B championship in Shandonagh last Tuesday evening. The home side made
the brighter start and had a point registered within the first minute.
Thereafter they found it difficult to break down a resolute Garrycastle
defence. Stephen McGuire made a very good save in the 6th minute to
prevent a goal for Shandonagh. Garrycastle had their first point in
the 11th minute as wing forward, Padraig Cosgrove, was on target. However,
Shandonagh continued to enjoy most of the possession and had two points,
both from frees, to jump into the lead. A further point from play pushed
the home side further ahead, but Garrycastle responded with a point
from Paul Donovan. Unfortunately Paul was injured as he scored and had
to be replaced immediately. A decisive score for the home side came
as the game entered its 28th minute, a goal after a defence splitting
move. However, Garrycastle responded in fine fashion to this set-back,
registering points from substitute, Frank Doolan, Peadar Mulvihill and
a free in injury time from Noel Galvin. This left just a goal between
the sides on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-5 in Shandonagh’s favour.
Garrycastle made a positive start to the second half and had a point
from Johnny McGuire to reduce the margin to just two points. However,
the home side got a second goal in the 37th minute to take a decisive
lead. Noel Galvin then reduced the margin with his second pointed free.
At this stage the home side were enjoying the vast majority of the possession
and the Garrycastle defence had to work tirelessly to restrict the number
of scoring opportunities. Three unanswered points for Shandonagh pushed
the gap out to 7 points with about 10 minutes remaining. A good Garrycastle
goal, scored by Johnny McGuire, reduced the margin in the 53rd minute
and Garrycastle were handed a wonderful change of a second green flag
soon afterwards, when a penalty was awarded, after a foul on Enda Keena.
Unfortunately from the Garrycastle perspective, the Shandonagh goalkeeper
saved Noel Galvin’s penalty and the danger was cleared. The home
side tacked on points from a free and from open play to lead by 6 points
as the game entered injury time. Garrycastle did have the last score,
a point from Johnny McGuire to leave it 2-10 to 1-8 in Shandonagh’s
favour at the end.
Overall
this was a disappointing performance for Garrycastle and the home side
deserved to win out. There were good displays from Stephen McGuire in
goal, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin and Sean Brennan in defence. The
forward division never clicked on the night but battled gamely throughout.
GARRYCASTLE:
Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Brian Carty, Keith Donoghue,
Sean Brennan. Finbarr Murray, Noel Galvin (0-2, 2f), Conor Molloy, Padraig
