League (14/7/10)
Garrycastle
1 - 9 Ballynacarrigy 4 - 12
Garrycastle
made the trip to Ballynacarrigy last Wednesday and suffered a heavy
loss to a more skillful and efficient home team. Two Ronan McComack
frees, a point from Barry Ruane and a goal from Eamonn Rattigan left
the scores 1-03 to 3-05 in favour of Ballynacarrigy at half time.
The
second half did not get much better from a Garrycastle point of view,
as they continued to ship some heavy scores. Two excellent 45 metre
kicks from Alex Gardiner along with points from Ronan McCormack(free),
Barry Ruane, Jack Donoghue and Paul Gunning finished Garrycastle’s
scoring.
A
poor performance on the day from Garrycastle who were best served by
David Hickey, Justin Barrett and Paul Gunning. Special mention must
go to stand in goalkeeper Michael Fagan who produced some wonderful
saves particularly in the second half.

Minor
League (30/6/10)
Garrycastle 1 - 7 Caulry 0 - 4
Garrycastle
minors collected a further two points with a hard fought win over Caulry
on Wednesday of last week. Played in wet conditions and with a very
strong wind, the team that were able to adapt best to the conditions
would come out on top. Fortunately it was Garrycastle who with the backing
of the wind in the second half would go on to win the game.
Caulry
opened the scoring but Garrycastle responded with a point from Eoin
Monaghan. Garrycastles defence was pushed to the limit for the remainder
of the half but were able to hold Caulry to two further points leaving
it 0-03 to 0-01 at half time.
With
the elements now in their favour for the second half, Garrycastle began
to take control of the game. With great defensive work from Barry Ruane,
Gary McCallon and Keith Donoghue along with a strong showing from midfield
pair Justin Barrett and Stephen Brennan, Garrycastle were now well on
top. Points from Ronan McCormack (3 frees) Paul Gunning (2) and a goal
from Alex Gardiner saw Garrycastle on their way. Caulry pulled one back
before Killian Dickson finished off the scoring with a fine point.

MINOR
LEAGUE (6/5/10)
Garrycastle
2-8 Castledaly 2-7
Garrycastle
picked up their first win in the league last Wednesday evening away
to Castledaly. Fielding without their county minor player Robbie Henshaw
who was missing, Garrycastle nonetheless came away with the two points.
Garrycastle started the brighter with two points from Keith Donoghue
and a long range goal from the lively Ronan Donoghue. Castledaly responded
well and scored 1-03 without reply. Despite Garrycastle missing a penalty,
they went in at half-time one point up after two further points from
Paul Gunning and Keith Donoghue.
Garrycastle
were under alot of pressure for most of the second half but were always
able to keep a point or two ahead of their opponents. Two points from
Paul Gunning and two Alex Gardiner frees plus a fantastic goal from

Garrycastle
Minors suffered their second successive defeat in the league losing

the remainder of the half and further points from Ronan McCormack (2
frees) Justin Barrett, Enda Keena, Paul Gunning and Ronan Donoghue helped
them to a 0-7 to 0-4 point lead at the break. Within ten minutes of
the re-start all had changed though with St Marys scoring 1-4 without
reply, the goal coming from the penalty spot after a bad mix up in the
Garrycastle defence. Garrycastle responded with a goal of their own
when Justin Barrett fired to the net. Two further Ronan McCormack frees
finished the Garrycastle scoring. St Marys finished strong with their

MINOR
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (DIVISION 2) FINAL (14/11/2009)
ST
MALACHYS/BALLINAGORE 3 – 7 GARRYCASTLE 1 – 7
Garrycastle
minors had to endure the agony of defeat in the Division 2 final last
Saturday afternoon. The game was moved from Hogan Park, Moate, to Lakepoint
Park, Mullingar, following the heavy rainfall overnight.
Garrycastle
made a bright start but some promising early chances were not converted
into scores. St Malachys /Ballinagore were to grab a goal in their first
attack of the game in the 3rd minute and matters got worse for the Garrycastle
lads in the 7th minute when another slick move saw a second green flag
raised as St Malachys /Ballinagore got a second goal to stretch their
lead. Garrycastle hot back with their first score soon afterwards, when
Stephen Relihan pointed a close range free. St Malachys /Ballinagore
were playing good incisive football at this stage and hit over a succession
of points from her to the 27th minute, in fact they increased their
lead by adding 5 unanswered points in succession. Garrycastle were struggling
to gain any foothold in the St Malachys /Ballinagore half, but did get
a couple of points before the break, with Alex Gardiner and Sean Brennan
on the scoreboard in the final minutes of the first half. This left
Garrycastle trailing by 2-5 to 0-3 at the break.
Garrycastle
needs to get a good start if they were to make a game of it. However,
disaster struck in the first minute of the second half, when another
St Malachys /Ballinagore attack yielded their third goal of the game.
This left 9 points between the sides but there was almost a full half
to recover. The Garrycastle fight back started in the 34th minute when
Stephen Relihan struck a precious goal for his team. Garrycastle drove
forward at every opportunity but found it hard to break down a stubborn
St Malachys /Ballinagore defence. In fact the St Malachys /Ballinagore
substitute goalkeeper brought a number of fine saves to deny Garrycastle
a much needed goal. Points from Tom O’Halloran and a free for
Stephen Relihan were the only reward for this period of Garrycastle
dominance. A pointed free in the 48th minute for St Malachys /Ballinagore
eased the pressure on their defence. Further points from Robbie Henshaw
and Tom O’Halloran kept Garrycastle in touch, but with only 5
minutes remaining they now needed goals to rescue the match. In fact
it was St Malachys /Ballinagore who registered the final score with
a point with just 3 minutes remaining. Garrycastle pressed forward but
all their attacks were repelled by the St Malachys /Ballinagore defenders.
While
these young players will be disappointed to lose a final, they showed
great heart and determination to fight back from a bit deficit at the
break. On another day some of the goal chances may have been converted.
However, they have to concede that the better side won on the day and
we extend our congratulations to St Malachys /Ballinagore.
Best
for Garrycastle were Liam Flynn, Gary Mullery and Gary McCallon in defence.
Robbie Henshaw worked tirelessly through in midfield. Stephen Relihan
and Tom O’Halloran impressed most in attack. The entire panel
of players, many of whom are available at minor again in 2010, put in
a great effort during the year and can be proud of their efforts throughout.
Well done also to the management team of Thomas Keena and his assistants,
Padraig Cosgove, James Duignan, Padraig Rattigan and John Gaffey.
GARRYCASTLE:
Ian Gardiner, Justin Barrett, Liam Flynn, Keith Donoghue, David Broughan,
Gary Mullery (Capt), Gary McCallon, Robbie Henshaw (0-1), David McHugh,
Alex Gardiner (0-1), Sean Brennan (0-1), Eoin Monaghan, Stephen Relihan
(1-2, 0-2f), Tom O’Halloran (0-2) and Enda Keena.
SUBS: Jamie Hoey for Keith Donoghue (18 min); Shane Mulvihill for Enda
Keena (44 min); Ian Turley for Alex Gardiner (55 min) and Jack Donoghue
for Eoin Monaghan (57 min).
MINOR
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI- FINAL (1/11/09)
Garrycastle 2 - 8 Tyrrellspass 2 - 7
Garrycastle made it through to the Minor County Final with a hard fought
one point victory over Tyrrellspass on Sunday last in St. Lomans Lakepoint
Park. With much confusion surrounding the playing of the fixture, the
match was eventually moved from a water-logged Tyrrellspass pitch to
the Mullingar venue.
Garrycastle had one change from the quarter final with Ian Turley replacing
Ian Gardiner on the wing. Tom O'Halloran opened our scoring with a well
taken point from play but Tyrrellspass were quick to respond with a
point of their own. Tyrellspass then had the chance to get the first
goal of the game when they were awarded a penalty, but fortunately for
Garrycastle the shot struck the post and was cleared. Stephen Rellihan
and Eoin Monaghan then kicked two further points for the 'Castle. Tyrellspass
then kicked over a free before Ian Turley finished off a fine team move
to leave it 0-4 to 0-2 at half-time.
With
the wind at our backs for the second half Garrycastle hoped to add some
early scores but it was Tyrrellspass who started the brighter and kicked
a good point. David McHugh tapped over a fine point, when minutes later
Enda Keena burst on to a through ball to calmly place the ball in the
roof of the net for a great goal. Again Tyrrellspass fought back and
were awarded their second penalty of the game which they converted.
Garrycastle were now under alot of pressure and needed a score which
Eoin Monaghan provided with his second point. Sean Brennan kicked a
huge point from out on the wing and then Brennan himself pounced on
a loose ball and skillfully flicked the ball to the net for our second
goal . But this Tyrrellspass team were not to give up just yet and kicked
two points in a row. Tom O'Halloran kicked a vital score for Garrycastle
after good work from Alex Gardiner. With the game entering its dying
moments Tyrrellspass were awarded a 14 metre free. Garrycastle lined
the goal-line with players and when the Tyrrellspass player shot for
goal the ball was saved but not cleared. This led to an almighty scrammble
ending with the ball been eventually buried to the back of the net.
But this was to prove the last action of a right good battle of a game.
Ian Gardiner was a solid presence in goals, with Justin Barrett and
Liam Flynn putting in fine performances. Keith Donoghue again excelled
at corner back while David Brougham and Gary McCallon worked tirelessly
for the 60 minutes. Gary Mullery at centre back led the team by example
with an inspiring display. The midfield duo of Robbie Henshaw and David
McHugh ran themselves into the ground for the cause. Ian Turley and
Eoin Monaghan contributed 3 points between them, while at centre forward
Sean Brennan's work rate was exceptional. Enda Keena had one of his
best performances of the year, while the inside two of Stephen Rellihan
and Tom O'Halloran were always a major threat when on the ball.
Garrycastle now progress to the final where they await the winners of
St. Malachys/Ballinagore and Rosemount. These players have put in a
massive effort all year and all Garrycastle supporters are urged to
come out and cheer the boys on when hopefully they can bring the cup
back to Garrycastle.
GARRYCASTLE: Ian Gardiner, Keith Donoghue, Liam Flynn, Justin Barrett,

Minor Club Championship (Quarter Final) - 18/10/2009
Garrycastle 4 - 14 Moate All Whites 0 - 4
Our Minors advanced to the championship semi finals with a fine victory
over Moate in Garrycastle last Sunday morning. Garrycastle started brightly
and were unlucky not to have raised a green flag with their first attack.
Gary McCallon got his sides first point with a fine shot from out on
the wing. Eoin Monaghan added a second and soon after Alex Gardiner
scored the first goal of the game with a powerful shot to the roof of
the net. Moate scored their first point from a free and likewise Stephen
Rellihan opened his account from a placed ball. Garrycastle took control
for the remainder of the half and further points from Rellihan (2),
David McHugh, Monaghan with his second, Enda Keena and Sean Brennan
left the scores 1-09 to 0-01 at the break.
Moate opening the scoring in the second half before Tom O'Halloran burst
into life hitting a goal and a point in quick succession. Brennan then
added his second before substitute Ian Turleys long range effort decieved
the Moate goalkeeper and flew into the back of the net. O'Halloran hammered
home his second major of the game and himself and Monaghan (2) finished
off the Garrycastle scoring with well taking points. Moate added a further
two points leaving Garrycastle worthy winners.
The semi final has been fixed for next Sunday away to Tyrellspass. Hopefully
a big crowd will turn out and support this talented bunch of lads in
their quest to reach the final.
Garrycastle; Ian Gardiner, Keith Donohue, Liam Flynn, Justin Barrett,
Gary McCallon, David Brougham, Gary Mullery, Robbie Henshaw, David McHugh,
Eoin Monaghan, Sean Brennan, Alex Gardiner, Stephen Relihan, Tom O'Halloran
and Enda Keena.
Subs;
Ian Turley, Eamonn Rattigan, Jack Donoghue, Sean Carey, Jamie Hoey and

MINOR
CHAMPIONSHIP (17/8/09)
The minor team got off to the worst possible start against Tyrrellspass
in the Championship , conceeding 3 goals in the first fifteen minutes
and trailing by 8 points at half time.
The second half saw a complete transformation and Garrycastle had total
dominance in all areas of the field. This dominance was not reflected
in the scores and despite two great goals from Shane Mulvihill and Sean
Brennan, the 17 wides kicked proved costly as Tyrrellspass held on to
win by one point. Best for Garrycastle were Shane Mulvihill, David Mc
Hugh, Stephen Relihan and Robbie Henshaw.
The next Championship game is against Ballinacarrigy.
GARRYCASTLE: Ian Gardiner, Sean Carey, David Brougham, Justin Barret,
Gary Mullery, Shane Mulvihill, Jamie Hoey, Robbie Henshaw, Liam Flynn,
Ian Turley, David McHugh, Stephen Relihan, Alex Gardiner, Sean Brennan,
Enda Keena, Keith Donoghue, Eamonn Rattigan, Peter Coleman, Conor Donoghue
and Barry Ruane.
MINOR
LEAGUE (Division 1): 9/4/2009
ST.
LOMAN'S 1 - 7 Garrycastle 0 - 4
Garrycastle
fell to their first defeat of the league campaign going down to St.
Lomans at Lakepoint Park last Thursday night. With only fifteen players
to choose from, Garrycastle took to the field playing against a very
strong wind in the first half. The home side drew first blood with a
point from play and then had the opportunity to go further ahead when
the referee awarded them a penalty. The full forward stepped up to take
it and although his effort looked like it was destined for the net,
Ian Gardiner dived full stretch to turn it around the post. This fantastic
save from our goalkeeper brought us to life and we equalised when David
McHugh slotted over a free. St. Lomans responded well though and started
to use the wind to their advantage. A siege on the Garrycastle goal
for the remainder of the half left the team in blue leading 1-04 to
0-01 at half-time.
Garrycastle
re-grouped at the interval and started the second period after making
some positional changes. However Lomans again started the stronger and
tapped over a further two points. We then had the chance to get back
into the game when the ref gave his second penalty of the evening when
a St. Lomans defender handled the ball on the ground. David McHugh sent
their goalkeeper the wrong way but unfortunately the ball hit the 'keepers
foot and crept wide. From the resulting 45 metre kick, Sean Brennan
blasted over. McHugh kicked over his second free of the game and the
impressive Peter Coleman rounded off a good move with his first point
for the club. The home team completed the scoring with another point
leaving Garrycastle with a six point defeat.
A
bad first half performance from Garrycastle and although efforts slightly
improved in the second period the team will be very disappointed with
the result. Travelling to any game with the bare fifteen players will
always be tough and it must be noted that management received no contact
or phone calls from the players that were missing. Best for Garrycastle
were Ian Gardiner who really put in a great performance between the
posts, Liam Flynn and Keith Donoghue at the back. Sean Brennan battled
hard at midfield, while up front Peter Coleman and David McHugh were
the pick of the six.
GARRYCASTLE:
Ian Gardiner, Sean Carey, Liam Flynn, Keith Donoghue, Gary Hogan, Gary
Mullery, Gary McCallon, Sean Brennan, David Brougham, Ian Turley, Peter
Coleman, Barry Ruane, Enda Keena, David McHugh, Eamonn Rattigan.
MINOR
LEAGUE (Division 1): 27/3/2009
Garrycastle 2 - 8 Athlone 0 - 11
Garrycastle opened their league account with a three point win over
neighbours Athlone last Wednesday night. With harsh weather conditions
not favouring either side, the large attending crowd were treated to
an entertaining match. Athlone drew first blood and took a two point
lead from two frees. Garrycastle finally woke up and burst into life
scoring 2-02 without reply. Ace corner forward Tom O'Halloran inflicted
serious damage on the Athlone defence with two fantastic goals. The
away team responded with another two pointed frees, before Shane Mulvihill
and Ian Turley added two more points much to the home supporters delight,
leaving the score 2-04 to 0-4 at the break.
Athlone started the second half with great determination, hitting five
unanswered points. Things worsened for Garrycastle when team captain
Shane Mulvihill had to retire due to injury. The momentum was now with
Athlone, but this Garrycastle team has a great spirit and they weren't
to lie down. A fine individual effort from Tom O'Halloran and another
from a free kept Garrycastle ahead. Athlone scored another two points
before David McHugh and O'Halloran rounded off the scoring leaving a
three point winning margin.
So a promising start to the campaign for Garrycastle who had strong
performances at the back from Liam Flynn, Gary McCallon and Gary Mullery.
Shane Mulvihill and Sean Brennan worked hard at midfield. In the forwards
David McHugh and Ian Turley put in strong performances while Tom O'Halloran's
pace, accuracy and desire picks him out as someone who could have a
big future in the game.
Garrycastle Team: Ian Gardiner, Sean Carey, Liam Flynn, Keith Donoghue,
David Brougham, Gary Mullery, Gary Hogan, Sean Brennan, Shane Mulvihill,
Gary Hogan, David McHugh, Eamonn Rattigan, Tom O'Halloran, Ian Turley,
Enda Keena. Subs: Peter Coleman, Conor Donoghue and Stephen Relihan.
Garrycastle 5 - 11 Ballymahon 1 - 9 (6/3/2009)
Garrycastle continued their early season good form with a 14 point victory
over Ballymahon. The home team had an excellent start and built up a
considerable lead by a half-time. Although Garrycastle had the luxury
of making changes at the interval including the opportunity to rest
key players, there will be a slight concern that the second half score
finished up a draw.
In goals Ian Gardiner inspired confidence in his defence witth a solid,
assured display. The two corner backs of Sean Carey and Keith Donoghue
stuck admirably to their task, while Liam Flynn's size and presence
stood out at full back. Our half back line made up of Mark Egan, Gary
Mullery and Jamie Hoey held firm as a unit under intense pressure in
the second half. At midfield the pairing of David Brougham and Sean
Brennan worked hard for the hour, with David's defencive abilities and
Sean's attacking drive complimenting each other. Up front Eamonn Rattigan
and Shane Mulvihill showed extremely well and got their hands on plenty
of football, while Gary McCallon leadership qualitites were to the fore
in the second half. Gary hogan when introduced at the break was very
confident in possesion and gave some nice touches. The inside line was
always a threat and although Ian Turley was unlucky with a couple of
goal bound efforts, his point taking and ball winning shone throughout
the game. Enda Kenna once again showed his predatory instincts and continued
his goal scoring form, while the Ballymahon defense had no answer to
the pace and accuracy of full forward Tom O'Halloran.
Garrycastle: Ian Gardiner, Sean Carey, Liam Flynn, Keith Donoghue, Mark
Egan, Gary Mullery, Jamie Hoey, David Brougham, Sean Brennan, Gary McCallon,
Shane Mulvihill, Eamonn Rattigan, Ian Turley, Tom O'Halloran, Enda Kenna,
Gary Hogan and Eoin Monaghan.
Garrycastle
4 - 12 Castledaly 1 - 13
Our
Minors had their first outing this year with a very competitive challenge
against a strong Castledaly team. This proved to be a highly entertaining
game with the two teams giving a good account of themselves for this
time of year. After a sluggish start from Garrycastle, Castledaly had
built up a small lead before the home team finally got to grips with
the pace of the game and ended up finishing the half on level terms.
Garrycastle had a strong second half and pulled away with some fantastic
scores and some great all round play. Overall management will be quite
pleased with this performance as there were some very encouraging signs.
One disappointing note was that Garrycastle only had 16 players to choose
from and if this team wants to mount a serious challenge at the minor
title a greater commitment is needed.
Garrycastle
Team: Mark McCallon, Sean Carey, David Brougham, Eoin Monaghan, Mark
Egan, Gary Mullery, Jamie Hoey, Liam Flynn, Sean Brennan, Gary McCallon,
Shane Mulvihill, Keith Donoghue, Enda Keena, Ian Turley, Tom O'Halloran,
Eamonn Rattigan.
Minor
training continues this Sunday morning at 12:00.
League games will commence on 7th, 14th and 21st March.
