RESULTS

UNDER 14 League (14/6/10)

Garrycastle 2-7 Athlone 4-11

Garrycastle U’14 went down to Athlone on Monday last in the league. This was a much improved performance by Garrycastle and each player can be happy with their hours work.

Garrycastle got off to the best possible start with goals from Darragh McCormack and Cathal Mannion. Despite some great defending from Adam Keena, Eric McCormack and Eoghan Sleven, Athlone soon replied with some good scores from play to give them a narrow lead at half time.

Athlone had a purple patch soon after half time and scored 3-6 without reply to effectively kill the game. Despite this Garrycastle continued to create scores and attack the Athlone rearguard. Darragh McCormack showed great accuracy and scored some wonderful points from play and from frees.

In addition to the above mentioned, outstanding for Garrycastle were Shane McHenry, Frank O’Farrell, and Cathal Mannion, while Liam Leahy, Joseph Byrne and Kenny Dolan also played well.

Special mention to Przemyslaw Zmuda who played his first U14 game and acquitted himself very well. Prezemyslay will be a big addition to the team over the next couple of months.

GARRYCASTLE: S. McHenry, A. Keena, E. Slevin, B. Kennady, J. Byrne, F. O’Farrell, E. McCormack, E. Kearney, L. Leahy, M. Duffy, K. Dolan, C. Mannion1-0, R. Mulvihal, P. Zmuda, D. McCormack 1-7. SUBS: B. Kenny for B. Kennady; S. Mulvihal for R. Mulvihal.

UNDER 14 League (15/4/10)

GARRYCASTLE 1-8 TUBBERCLAIR 1-7

Garrycastle U14’s collected their first 2 league points on Thursday last in Tubberclair in a very close and exciting game. The first half was very close with both sides trading points. Mark Duffy (2), Eric
Kearney (2) and Darragh McCormac were the scorers for Garrycastle.

The second half continued in the same vein, with both sides guilty of some poor shooting. With 10 minutes to go, Garrycastle were 1 point up and putting a lot of pressure on the Tubberclair defence, however, tired shooting caused a lot of opportunities to go a begging. Tubberclair were awarded a penalty, fortunately for Garrycastle the shot was placed wide of the post. Further pressure by Tubberclair yielded a goal and a point to put them into a 3 point lead with about 4 minutes to play. At this stage it looked like the points were going to Tubberclair, but Garrycastle showed tremendous fighting spirit and immediately laid siege to the Tubberclair goal. Eric Kearney reduced the deficit to one point, but a further 6 wides in this period looked like costing Garrycastle the game. However, the sides never say day attitude began to show, and in one final attack Eric, Kenny, Mark, Shane and Darragh all combined to set up Ronan Mulvihal who blasted the ball to the roof of the Tubberclair net to go one point up. Tubberclair to their credit went in search of an equaliser but some superb defending by Eric McCormac and Eoghan Slevin in the dying seconds ensured that Garrycastle held on for the narrowest of wins.

Considering there were numerous players on both sides playing their second game of the evening, and 2 players playing their third game, this was an outstanding game and both teams deserve a lot of credit for there effort, spirit and skill.

For Garrycastle Cathal Mannion in goal was solid all through and pulled of 2 fine saves at crucial times. Eohgan Slevin at full back was a revelation and dominated the square for the hour and received fine support from Adam Keena and Frank O’Farrell. Frank even found time in the closing stages of the game to drive Garrycastle forward and created numerous scoring opportunities. Eric McCormac was outstanding at half back as was ably assisted by Ben Kennady and Joseph Byrne. In midfield Eric Kearney and Liam Leahy put in a great hours work with Eric’s constant attacking runs and high fielding causing all sorts of problems for Tubberclair. Liam did a magnificent defensive job and effected numerous tackles and interceptions. In the forwards the work rate and skill of Kenny Dolan and Ronan Mulvihal caused constant problems. Darragh McCormac, Shane McHenry, Sean Mulvihal, Mark Duffy and Eoin Duignan all had outstanding games and gave their markers all sorts of problems with their movement and skill.

GARRYCASTLE : Cathal Mannion, Adam Keena, Eohgan Slevin, Frank Farrell, Eric McCormac, Ben Kennedy, Joseph Byrne, Eric Kearney (0-4), Liam Leahy, Mark Duffy (0-2), Kenny Dolan (0-3), Ronan Mulvihal (1-0), D. McCormac (0-1), Shane McHenry, Sean Mulvihal, Eoin Duignan.

UNDER 14 FEILE (13/3/2010)

Garrycastle 3 - 2 St. Michaels 6 - 10

Garrycastle U14’s were well beaten in the Feile quarter final on Saturday 13th in Garrycastle against a very strong St. Michaels combination team.

After the great win against Moate, Garrycastle were confident that they could progress in this competition. However, injuries and unavailability seriously hampered the preparation for this game. Cian Hayden (unavailable), Eric McCormac (injured) were non starters and Ben Kennady and Adam Keena both carried injuries into the game and were unable to perform to their usual high standards. To compound this Eric Kearney also sustained an injury during the first half and was unable to continue.

Garrycastle got off to the perfect start in this game when Mark Duffy goaled after a move which started direct from the throw. St. Michaels responded immediately with 2 goals and a point after some indecisive defending in the Garrycastle defense. Ken Dolan scored a further goal for Garrycastle after a lovely piece of skill from Cathal Mannion had opened up the St.Michaels defense and Evan Dalton followed this up with a fine point from play. However, St. Michaels finished the half strongly with a further 2-2 to end the half leading by 4-3 to 2-1.

At half time Garrycastle had to reshuffle the team after Eric Carney was forced off through injury. This severely weakened the team and St. Michaels took full advantage and added a further 2-7 in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. This effectively ended the game as a contest, however, Garrycastle showed tremendous fighting spirit and kept playing until the final whistle. During the last 10 minutes Garrycastle added a further 1-1 through Frank O’Farrell and Ken Dolan and had the St. Michaels defense under severe pressure at the final whistle.

This was a disappointing result for Garrycastle, but never the less there were some outstanding performances. In defense Andrew Grogan was very impressive when moved to full back, Frank O’Farrell, Sean Kilgarriff and Joseph Byrne displayed tremendous character and bravery throughout and effected numerous tackles, blocks and interceptions against physically bigger opponents. Eric Kearney and Liam Leahy battled bravely for the hour and in the forward line the Ken Dolan and Evan Dalton displayed great skill and determination for the full hour. Ronan and Sean Mulvihal, Darragh McCormac and Eoin Duignan also can be very pleased with their performances.

GARRYCASTLE: Eoghan Slevin, Andrew Grogan, Adam Keena, Frank Farrell (1-0), Shane McEnry Sean Kilgarriffe, Ben Kennedy, Eric Kearney, Liam Leahy, Mark Duffy (1-1), Evan Dalton (0-1), Darragh McCormack, Ronan Mulvihill, Kenneth Dolan (1-0), Cathal Mannion, Joseph Byrne, Eoin Duignan, Sean Mulvihal.

Training continues at the later time of 6.45 each Monday and Thursday.

U14 Feile
(6th March 2010)

Garrycastle 2-10 Moate All Whites 2-06

Garrycastle U14’s had their first competitive outing of 2010 in Hogan Park in Moate on Saturday last against a very skilful and determined Moate team.

The first half was a very low scoring affair. Ken Dolan with a close in free, opened the scoring. Ken scored again after a good passing movement involving Mark Duffy and Cian Hayden and got his third after Liam Leahy set him up after winning a Moate kick out. Mark Duffy added a fourth after great work by Cathal Mannion.

Coming up to half time Garrycastle were leading by 4pts to 2, however, disaster struck when a goal bound shot took a wicket deflection and wrong footed Eoghan Slevin to give Moate a 1-02 to 0-4 half time lead.

Moate started the second half by adding a further point and at this stage, Garrycastle had it all to do to get back into the game. However, in the next 15 minutes Garrycastle added a further 2 goals and 6 points to race into a commanding 10 point lead. Eric Kearney and Liam Leahy started to dominate midfield and supply good quality ball to the forwards.
Mark Duffy with 2 goals, one a 20 yard effort and the other a penalty, Eric Kearney with 3 points, one free after a foul on Ronan Mulvihal, another after a good passing from Shane McHenry and Cian Hayden and a third after more good work by Liam Leahy, Cian Hayden and Mark Duffy. Ken Dolan chipped in with another brace of points after great play involving Ronan Mulvihal, Cian Hayden, Eric Kearney and Cathal Mannion.

With 10 minutes to go it looked like Garrycastle were safely into the next round, however, Moate had other ideas. They started to dominate midfield and put huge pressure on the Garrycastle rearguard. It required some outstanding defending from Evan Dalton, Frank Farrell and Andrew Grogan to keep the goal intact. On two occasions the defense was breached, but Eoghan Slevin produced 2 stunning saves to frustrate the All Whites. Moate did eventully find the net, but, in the end Garrycastle managed to hold on and run out winners by 4 points.
In addition to the above, Sean Kilgarriffe had and outstanding hour in defense and Ben Kennady did a fine marking job on a very skillful Moate danger man.

Garrycastle will be delighted with this victory and with some aspects of the performance, but will be concerned that they allowed Moate to get back into the game. It was also very encouraging that all of the subs made an impact when introduced and the management will be very pleased as they look forward to the season ahead.

Training continues on Monday and Thursday at 6.30 pm.

Under 14 Challenge (2 March 2010)

Garrycastle U14’s had a very useful challenge game against a strong St. Brigids outfit in Kiltoom. This was the proverbial game of two halves, with Garrycastle dominating the first half and St. Brigids coming back strongly in the second.

Garrycastle, playing in an unfamiliar blue strip, played some lovely combination football in the first half. Every player showed great commitment and heart in competing for every ball. The defense and midfield were well on top and limited the St. Brigids attack to very few opportunities for scores. Each of the 6 forwards scored from play and combined very well with each other. The half time score was Garrycatle 3 - 10 St. Brigids 1 - 3.

In the second half Garrycastle faced a stiff breeze and Brigids introduced some very strong physical players to the forward line. This posed some new problems for the Garrycastle defense and midfield. Despite this, the team produced a very determined display and managed to pick off a further 2 goals and 3 points on the break. However, as the second half progressed, the Garrycastle lads ran out of steam and allowed Brigids in for some crucial late scores.

The final score ended Garrycastle 5 - 13 St. Brigids 7 - 10.

This was the first outing of the year for this team and the management was very encouraged by the skill and commitment of all 18 players used.
