UNDER 21 CHAMPIONSHIP (28/10/11)

CAULRY 3-6 GARRYCASTLE 1-10

Garrycastle lost out narrowly in a well contested under 21 championship tie in Garrycastle last Friday night. Playing with the aid of a breeze, Garrycastle made a positive start and registered a point from team captain, James Dolan, just 2 minutes into the fray. However, Caulry hit back immediately when a slick attack cut open the Garrycastle defence and a goal was scored. Enda Keena had a point for Garrycastle in the 5th minute to narrow the gap, but Caulry had a point from a free soon afterwards. Paul Gunning reduced the margin again in the 13th minute. Caulry were awarded what seemed a soft penalty in the 20th minute and took full advantage to record their second green flag. Garrycastle responded in positive fashion to this setback and dominated possession for the remainder of the half. A pointed free from Eoin Monaghan was quickly followed up with one from open play by the same player. Kevin Dunne then had a point to leave just a point between the sides after 25 minutes. Garrycastel had a few chances to get an equaliser but a combination of poor shooting and resolute defence by Caulry kept them out. Caulry had the last say before the break with a point from play to leave the scoreline at 2-2 to 0-6 in the visitor’s favour at the break.

Ian Turley was introduced by Garrycastle for the second period and he was fouled close in and Eoin Monaghan had a point from the resulting free. Caulry had a point of their own and this was quickly followed up with a point from a free. The game was right back in the melting pot in the 37th minute, when Kevin Dunne goaled after good approach play. The game ebbed and flowed for the next 10 minutes with neither side converting some opportunities. A Garrycastle attack broke down and a quick counter attack by Caury yielded a third goal in the 47th minute to put them firmly in the driving seat. This score was immediately followed up with yet another point for Caulry. Yet again Garrycastle responded in fine style and exerted some dominance. Two points from Alex Gardiner, one from open play and one form a free, reduced the gap to just a point with 6 minutes remaining. The gap was reduced to the minimum in the 58th minute as Justin Barrett had a lovely point. However, try as the might Garrycastle could not conjure up an equaliser. In fact it was Caulry who had the final score, a point from open play in the final minute of normal time. Garrycastle kept pressing forward but could not find a way through during the 4 additional minutes played by the Referee, Liam McDaniel.

This was a result that could have gone Garrycastle’s way, but they failed to take a number of good scoring opportunities in both halves’. There were some good performances by Sean Carey, Gary McCallon and Mark McCallon in defence. James Dolan played a captain’s part with a terrific display and he was well supported in midfield by Justin Barrett. In attack, the most prominent were Eoin Monaghan and Alex Gardiner.

GARRYCASTLE: Mark Keenan, Gary Mullery, Sean Brennan, Sean Carey, Gary McCallon, Mark McCallon, Ronoan Donoghue, James Dolan (Capt, 0-1), Justin Barrett (0-1), Enda Keena (0-1), Eoin Monaghan (0-3, 2f), Alex Gardiner (0-2, 1f), Paul Gunning (0-1), Cathal Joyce and Kevin Dunne (1-1).
SUBS: Ian Turley for R Donoghue (half time); Eamonn Rattigan for P Gunning (54 min).
