South
Westmeath U10 GO Games League, Finals day (11/6/10)
Having finished with the group stages of this years U10 GO games league,
Garrycastle were drawn to play Castledaly in the finals day competition,
held in Rosemount on Friday last. On the evening, Garrycastle had almost
a full squad to pick from, with a total of 23 players making the trip.
As is normal in this competition, two games at 10-a-side are played,
and the scores aggregated to give a match result. However, on this occasion,
Castledaly fielded only one team, so the Garrycastle "Green"
team played Castledaly as planned, while the Garrycastle "Red"
team played a challenge
match against the Caulry second team.
The Garrycastle "Green" team, captained by Robert Kelly for
the evening started brightly, even though playing against a brisk wind,
and took an early lead with points from Eoin Mulvihill, Brian Ruane
and Jason Nugent. As the match progressed, they took control of the
game, and had a comfortable lead at the break courtesy of further points
from Patrick McKiernan and Charlie O'Connor. After the half-time turnaround,
an early push from Castledaly was capably handled by Joe Carmody and
Dara Mulvihill in the back line. The tide now turned in Garrycastle's
favour again, and excellent scores from the industrious Darragh Kenna
and Tommy Devery stretched the
lead further. As the game drew towards a conclusion, Castledaly pressed
again, but excellent goalkeeping from Andrew Monahan, and some fine
interceptions from Lauren O'Kane, kept the scores to a minimum. So,
after a string of near misses during the league campaign, Garrycastle
kept the best to last, and took a deserved win on the night.
The Garrycastle "Red" team played a challenge game against
the Caulry second team, and also emerged with a win after an enthralling
contest. Impressive on the evening were Jack Fitzgerald and Cillian
Lyons in midfield, and a potent strikeforce of Fearghal Mullin, Conor
O'Driscoll and Aaron Byrne up front.
This was a much improved showing from the whole U10 squad, and augurs
well for the remainder of the summer competitions.
Garrycastle "Green" squad: Andrew Monahan, Joe Carmody, Dara
Mulvihill, Brian Ruane, Robert Kelly, Eoin Mulvihill, Patrick McKiernan,
Charlie O'Connor, Jason Nugent, Darragh Kenna,
Tommy Devery, Lauren O'Kane.
Garrycastle "Red" squad: Glen McCallon, Aaron Byrne, Brad
Murphy, Ian Carroll, Jack Fitzgerald,
Fearghal Mullin, Cillian Lyons, Saoirse Breslin, Jonathan Henson, ConorO'Driscoll,
AnnaMaria Kovac.
The next outing for the U10 squad is in the Shield final of the Caulry
GAA Annual U10 Larry Nugent Memorial Tournament, which will be held
on Saturday next, June 19th, in Caulry GAA grounds. Garrycastle's first
match is timed for 11:45am. All players are requested to be in Garrycastle
for 10:45am, or travel direct to Caulry for 11:15am.
U8
PLAY + STAY BLITZ
Round 3 of the blitz brought Garrycastle u7/u8s to Caulry on a wet Saturday
morning. For our first match we played a strong Caulry team. Having
said that our team put together some great passages of play from our
back line Peter Mulvihill+Cian Donoghue through our midfield Ryan Cornally
and Aoife Galvin resulting in some well taking scores from our forwards
Cathal Redmond + Sean Quinn. Our goalkeeper for this match was Bill
Carmody and he was on excellent form, stopping most of the shots the
Caulry forwards fired at him.
Our
second match was against a tough Moate All Whites team and our team
had to work harder to get scores and work hard they did with Emily Halligan
+ Ryan Cornally in midfield working well together and Cian Donaghue
kicking some great scores up front.
Our
final match was against Rosemount where our new younger players began
to shine with Jamie Carroll ,Conn O Hara and Jack Mulvihill in defence
stopping Rosemount forwards from scoring. The midfield players had a
great game with Faith Green, Kotryna Svolkinaite delivering some great
passes to Adam Mulvihill who took his scores well.
South Westmeath U10 Football League, Round 5 (21
May 2010)
The Garrycastle U9/ U10 played their third match
in this years league away
to the Moate All-Whites on Friday evening last. On a beautiful warm
summers
evening, 25 players made the trip to the Carmelite field, allowing two
strong teams to be fielded.
As normal in the South Westmeath league, two games at 10-a-side are
played,
and the scores aggregated to give a match result.
The Garrycastle "Green" team was led from the center of the
field by Joe
Carmody, and started brightly, opening up an early lead courtesy of
points
from Charlie O'Connor, and two from Brian Ruane before the all-whites
registered their first score. An immediate riposte from Charlie again
widened the gap to three points, before a sustained spell of pressure
saw
the Moate team regain parity. As half time approached, there was nothing
to
choose between the teams, before two quick points left Moate in the
lead by
a 0-6 to 0-4 score. Within moments of the restart points from Brian
and Joe
brought the teams level. From then on, scores were traded equally by
both
teams with further scores from Charlie, the industrious Cillian Lyons
and
some excellent opportunistic point taking from Conor O'Driscoll for
the
Garrycastle side. However, as the game entered its final minute, and
Garrycastle pushed up in search of the winning score, they unfortunately
left gaps at the back which were punished with two late points from
Moate,
to give Moate the win on a score of Moate 0-13, Garrycastle 0-11.
In the second game, the Garrycastle "Red" team had a similar
experience,
taking an early lead and maintaining it to the half-time break. Early
in the
second half, an injury to the full-back necessitated a change in the
backline, and while the revamped backline settled the Moate team took
advantage to move into the lead, which they held to the final whistle.
The
final score in the games was Moate 0-9, Garrycastle 0-6. Some excellent
displays in this game from Eoin Mulvihill in the center of the field,
and
poacher extraordinary Jason Nugent up front.
The final score gave the aggregate win to Moate, on a scoreline of Moate
0-22, Garrycastle 0-17.
Overall this was a good team performance by the players present, and
both
teams can be pleased with their efforts on the day.
In addition, this game saw the debut in the Garrycastle colours of twins
Alex and Eric Cleary, who impressed greatly with their effort and
enthusiasm, and we wish them well at the start of their Garrycastle
careers!
Garrycastle "Green" squad:
Ferghal Mullin, Joe Sorohan, Tommy Devery, AnnaMaria Kovac, Cillian
Lyons,
Joe Carmody, Brian Ruane, Aaron Byrne, Conor O'Driscoll, Charlie O'Connor,
Alex Cleary, Lauren O'Kane.
Garrycastle "Red" squad:
Ian Carroll, Jan Kruszynski, Robert Kelly, Saoirse Breslin, Dara Mulvihill,
Eoin Mulvihill, Daragh Kenna, Glen McCallon, Jason Nugent, Eric Cleary,
Cian
Mulhall, Jonathan Henson, Jack Fitzgerald.
We have two matches left to play in this years league, against
Ballynacarrigy and Kilbeggan/St. Josephs which were postponed due to
weather etc. We aim to have these games played in the next week, so
please
watch for texts with fixture information.
Training continues on Fridays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, and as always,
new
players are very welcome!

Castledaly and St. Malachys/Ballinagore in a series of small sided games.
As
always in these activities, the focus is on participation, with no scores
being recorded for the individual matches. However, this does not lessen
the
excitement either for the young players or indeed the large turnout
of

football. Indeed, it was heartening to see such a large crowd attend
to
cheer on, and encourage, these young players.
On the morning, Garrycastle had 9 players in attendance, and all of
them
played their part in all three matches played. There was some great
football
served up by all of the teams present, with the Garrycastle squad impressing
with their skill and teamwork.

South
Westmeath U10 Football League, Round 3 (25/4/2010)
The
Garrycastle U9/ U10 played their second match in this years league at
home to Maryland/Tang on Sunday morning. On a noticeably cold and wet
morning, it was a much smaller squad than usual that was available,
due to other commitments.
As
usual in the South Westmeath league, two games at 10-a-side are played,
and the scores aggregated to give a match result.
The
Garrycastle "Red" team was led by Glen McCallon, and started
in fine form, pressing immediately with a fine point from Jason Nugent.
A narrow wide from Eoin Mulvihill then led to a period of pressure from
Maryland/Tang, who scored three points without reply before Dara Mulvihill
scored the first of three well taken points. The impetus switched again
and Maryland/Tang were able to pull away heading towards the break,
before Jason notched up another two points to leave Garrycastle in touch
at halftime. The second half was sustained pressure from Maryland/Tang,
and despite the best efforts of Glen in goal, who made a number of fine
saves right throughout the game, ably backed up by Matthias O'Neill,
Jan Kruszynski and Nathaniel O'Neill (making his debut at U10 grade),
Maryland/Tang were able to pull away. Charlie O'Connor was unlucky on
a number of occasions not to up the Garrycastle score and Katlyn Parker
and Lauren O'Kane tried hard to get
scores against a well marshaled defence.
In
the second game, the Garrycastle "Green" team was led by Ian
Carroll, playing in goal, and the story here was similar, with some
excellent scoresfrom the Garrycastle forwards, (Cian Mulhall, Colleen
McCormack and Jack Fitzgerald), being quickly equalled by the Maryland/Tang
forwards. Despite huge effort from Brian Ruane, Dara Kenna and Patrick
McKiernan in midfield, well supported by Annamaria Kovac, Cillian Lyons
and Aaron Byrne at the back, Maryland/Tang ran out winners in the end.
The
final score gave the aggregate win to Maryland/Tang. Overall this was
a good team performance by the players present, and bothteams can take
pride in their efforts on the day.
Garrycastle
"Green" squad: Ian Carroll (captain), Annamaria Kovac, Cillian
Lyons, Aaron Byrne, Brian Ruane, Patrick McKiernan, Dara Kenna, Cian

McCormack.
Garrycastle
"Red" squad: Glen McCallon (captain), Jan Kruszynski, Matthias
O'Neill, Nathaniel
O'Neill, Eoin Mulvihill, Dara Mulvihill, Charlie O'Connor, Lauren O'Kane,
Jason Nugent, Katlyn Murray.
Our
next match in this years league is scheduled as an away fixture against
Kilbeggan/St. Josephs on May 9th. However, as May 9th is also the National
"La na gClub", this fixture will most likely be re-scheduled.

are very welcome!
South
Westmeath U10 Football League, Round 2 (18/4/10)
The Garrycastle U9/U10 squad finally played their first games in this
years South Westmeath League against near neighbours Tubberclair in
Garrycastle on Sunday last. Having suffered numerous postponements due
to weather and Easter holidays, the chance to finally play was greeted
with great enthusiasm, and a squad of 29 players was available on the
day.
As is usual in the South Westmeath league, two games at 10-a-side are
played, and the scores aggregated to give a match result.
The Garrycastle "Red" team was led by Eoin Mulvihill, and
started in excellent fashion with a point from Jason Nugent within a
minute of the game starting. Tubberclair were not standing back and
replied with two points of their own, before Conor O'Driscoll leveled
the scores for the home side. A
Tubberclair '45 gave them the lead once more, but three points in succession
from Patrick McKiernan, Glen McCallon and Dara Mulvihill brought the
Garrycastle team to the fore again. As the half time break approached,
Tubberclair pressed hard to regain the lead, but points from Conor,
Eoin and Patrick gave Garrycastle a one point lead at the break.
As the second half started, Tubberclair regained the lead as a re-shuffled
Garrycastle team took a while to find their rhythm again. During this
time Andrew Monahan in the Garrycastle goal was called on to make a
couple of fine saves to keep his team in the game. However, from then
on, the pressure was all applied by Garrycastle, and they were rewarded
with scores from Dara, Eoin, Patrick and Owen Keogh, (raiding from the
full-back position), and ended the game strongly to finish on a score
of Garrycastle 0-13 Tubberclair 0-10.
Garrycastle "Red" squad: Andrew Monahan, Cillian Lyons, Owen
Keogh, Aaron Byrne, Dara Mulvihill, Eoin Mulvihill (captain), Patrick
McKiernan, Conor O'Driscoll, Jason Nugent,
Annamaria Kovac, Lauren O'Kane, Cian Mulhall, Fergal Mullin, Glen McCallon
and Saoirse Breslin.
In the second game, the Garrycastle "Green" team captained
by Brian Ruane, started strongly, and struck for a couple of early points
Tubberclair fought hard in this match, and honours were even heading
to the break, with some good performances from Robert Kelly at full
back, Ian Carroll, making his debut for Garrycastle in goal, and Joe
Carmody in the middle of the field.
As the second half started, Garrycastle eased in front briefly, but
the Tubberclair team upped their game and applied intense pressure for
the last 10 minutes, scoring 4 points without reply during that time.
A by now tiring Garrycastle team could not close the gap, and Tubberclair
ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-21 to 0-15.
Garrycastle "Green" squad: Ian Carroll, Jan Kruszynski, Robert
Kelly, Joe Sorohan, Dara Kenna, Brian Ruane (captain), Joe Carmody,
Charlie O'Connor, Jack Fitzgerald, Katlyn Murray, Aoife Green, Jonathan
Henson, Aishling Gillen and Tommy Devery.
The final score gave the aggregate win to Tubberclair by 3 points. Overall
this as a very good team performance, and while there re some areas
that can be improved upon, the team as a whole can take pride in their
effort and skill. All substitutes were used and all made their contribution
to two excellent games.
In all, 11 players made their debut for Garrycastle in this match, and
we congratulate all of them, and hope that it is only the start of a
long and happy association with the club.
A reminder that training for the U9/U10 age group continues on Friday
evenings from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Garrycastle. New players are always
welcome to come along.
Our next match in this years league is a home fixture against Maryland/Tang
on Sunday next, April 25th. Details will be sent to all players during
theweek. Please note that the postponed first round game vs. Ballynacaragy
will also be re-scheduled over the next few weeks.
